As an overhead crane operator, I found your video extremely interesting. I unload coils all day. The majority of coils I unload are on pallets, strapped and covered in paper. With those, I have to place them on a machine that flips them. Thanks !

Completely agree with what you said. Good video. I pull a lot of coils and even in Houston. I’ll notice guys won’t use enough racks, they’ll put one chain on the front and the back and blast out of there. And these are large coils, I don’t care if they’re small you should still do it right, it’s dangerous whether it’s shotgun or suicide.

Appreciate the knowledge!! I've been driving for 2 and a half year's and looking to get into flatbed in the near future. God willing, we'll cross paths. Thanks for the positive energy. Stay safe 🙏

Great informative video thank you. I’m picking up my first coil tomorrow, I’ve seen a couple videos on securing them before but this was by far the best video. Thank you very much!

Coils are more simple and logic than what everybody makes you believe. Overdue the securement use 50/50% front and back against each other stopping any force, use dunnage as stoppers and don't drive like your empty simple

Just an observation from an ordinary guy, not a trucker. I have seen many videos about the danger these coils present, so why not design a sturdy cradle with a circular interior that would hold the coil in place in an accident as well as contain it should the straps give way? Perhaps a cradle that could be quickly and solidly mounted on a flatbed, or simply design a special purpose trailer with a built in cradle. Special purpose trailers such as auto transports have existed for a very long time.

My question is why do they always secure the rolls standing up where they want to roll?
Why not lay them down flat where they have way more surface area in contact with the surface they are sitting on?
Seems a lot less likely to roll over the cab or down the interstate if the load does come loose…. Seems like common sense

Hell yeah i loaded a coil in detroit yesterday for the weekend going to chattanooga, there were loads going to kansas city for over $6 a mile but it was 49000 lbs kinda thinking i should have taken it lol

Buy a coil pocket aka coil tarp, they are amazing...

Nice job! I can always tell what drivers don't pay for their own tarps by seeing them flapping in the wind. I don't want to see ANY movement in my mirrors other than the trees going by.

I thought you always placed coils sideways (with the "eye" facing forward and back), so that they could never roll forward and crush the cab in an accident(?).

I've nvr seen anyone put a strap through the middle, but over the top.

I have a question. At Melton they tell us to use 12 chains for a 45000 lb coil because the chains are rated for 4000 lbs. if this technique of wrapping around multiple spools allow me to use less then the 12 chains?.
