I think if you lay all the way down and start dowing sit-up correcty you can engage upper part of abs, while later part engages lower abs. If you don't lay down completly, you won't be engaging upper abs muscles.

Keeping tension in the muscle just means you'll reach failure sooner. It's better to get a full stretch(hence more muscle recruitment) and go to failure.

nope, you wont achieve a full stretch of the muscle. Baaaad advice. By laying down u are still under tension (maximal tension)

you can go all the way down so long as you maintain a tight core and flex it the whole way down rather than resting your back and shoulders into it the way you displayed
