My cordless electric shaver crapped out (rechargable batteries died), so I bought a soldering iron and new rechargeable batteries, learned soldering basics on YouTube and in a couple of hours I had it running better than new due to the higher capacity of the new batteries. I felt like a friggin' superstar! DIY forever!!

Great story, lovely moral. Thanks for posting this.

I think you did this right. I am a big fan of "repairing" old things by overhauling and modernizing them. Even if you replaced everything properly, In the end you would have a device from an era where things pulled a lot of power in "standby" mode.

Still a fan of yours, I have always found wisdom in my elders, albeit 1 year older than me…

Kef stuff is renowned for breaking. One of my X300A speakers died recently. From researching the (very common) issue it looks like recycling is the only solution.

I'm avoiding Kef completely from now on.

No need to find capacitors by the same brand, any other would work as long as the voltage is at least what's written on yours (can be higher) and capacitance can be lower or higher as well (if they fit physically). There are plenty on Ebay as well, just make sure the seller has enough positive feedback and sold many items. Only thing is other parts might be damaged as well, so you might have someone that really knows what to look for fix it. I would definitely have it fixed if I knew a shop and the price made sense.

Nice fix on the sub! I'm plucking up the courage to re-cap my old Harman/Kardon amp. I'm no stranger to a soldering iron, but I've never tackled anything quite like this.

Hi, thanks for the video I have the same problema with My JBL sub, that was conected to the LFE output from my Onkyo receiver. With the Fosi sould I use a RCA cable LFE output to a splitter RCA in on the Fosi, and use the Sub output from the Fosi directly to My sub speaker? Thanks again!

Just to help those with the same KEF PSW2150 Subwoofer. My subwoofer had a loud buzzing noise. Fixed it by replacing capacitor C52 on the amp board. Its a 47uF 50V 85C capacitor. If you can find a 47uF 63V 105C capacitor replacement, that would be best. Not guaranteed to fix your problem, but it seems this is a common problem with this subwoofer. There's a post on AVS Forum that goes into details.

I have one of those powering a 12" Cerwin Vega sub and seams to do good enough job. Woofer moves well, no audible distortion even when pushing the volume up a bit.

All electrolytic capacitors are easy to replace. In case of PSU filter capacitors it really doesn’t make much difference if your capacitance goes from 12000uF to 10000uF as you’re not likely to push the amplifier to its limits all the time. Also those look like snap-in types that have larger terminals so you can also put in normal ones as well. Maker is irrelevant and only thing that really matters is the voltage rating (use same or higher). But if you find a same value caps you should use them.

I fix anything I can! It's so rewarding.
Also these fosi amps look great, I've been looking for a very small amp for a project this may be the one.

I was working at a gaming convention/trade show many years ago. I came away with a load of swag, including an Intensor Gaming Chair. In a matter of hours I burned out the amp in the dual subwoofer enclosure. Intensor sent me a replacement, which was rather nice considering it was a show demo and cost me nothing. Anyway, I burned that one out in no time at all as well. In the early 2000s eBay had loads of fairly inexpensive brand name Japanese integrated amplifiers and receivers. I bought a few of them and ended up using a matched pair of Hitachi amps to power the subwoofers. All of the amps had manufacturing dates of 1979 or 1980. These predated the use of IC amplifier chips. The pair of Hitachis are still going strong, but the amps I was using for full range failed last year. All things considered, I managed 15 years of daily use on amplifiers that were over 20 years old when I bought them. Now I have a stack of old amplifiers that need their power supply circuits repaired. Someday.

Props on the fix, Paul. I have a Kef system too on my modest home system, though anchored by a small Velodyne sub, all of which has (touch wood) worked flawlessly to date. As to the principle of taking it apart and having a look, couldnt agree more. Recently, did the same with a modest problem on my iMac. It did take time to figure out the fix (a faulty RAM chip) but I got there eventually.

We have a 20 year old Panasonic stereo that suffers from an inevitable issue with its caps. Luckily, there's like 5 detailed posts on the net about it, but the chances of an economical repair in my country seem grim. Still, enjoyed seeing your creative solution. Hopefully I'll find a workaround like you did.

I was talking to a millennial that I work with, he used to sell appliances at Lowes.
He was shocked that I expected white goods to last at least a decade. He did not believe that you could expect such big ticket items to last 10 plus years.
I am not sure if I should blame planned obsolesce or changing technology and the fact that modern technology has a shorter lifespan?
Either way I always buy the more simple product because I know I can make it last longer.
Kudos to you for fixing these things yourself. Sadly I do not have the patience for such endeavors, usually.

You should be able to get new capacitors very easily. Try Element14 / Farnell / Newark / whatever they call themselves in your country. Anything with the correct µF and V should work. Something with a higher V should also work.

I resurrected an old sub by replacing the blown plate Amp with one from Parts Express. Also helped my brother fix a dry rotted surround on another sub. Don't throw it out, just fix the damn thing!
