Solar Surge will teach you all about being energy independent and how to set up your home to run off-the-grid during an emergency. We empower families to take control of their energy generation and storage so that they will never be left in the dark without electricity.

In this video Joe explains the new net metering rules in North Carolina.

Thank you for the update. This will really hurt grid-tie adoption in North Carolina.

Utilities did the same in Texas. They switched from true net metering to paying ‘avoided cost’ compensation for feed in, “in order to be fair to non-Solar customers’. I hate to say it, but the solution will be adding batteries to systems or greatly shifting loads to solar production peak times. I do my best to design systems as ‘off-grid’, connected to grid as the first means of backup charge, then thirdly roll over to generator charge.

Must be nice for the power companies to just be able to decide to not pay you for the power they are taking from you. I'm sure they wouldn't like it, if you just decided to stop paying them full price for the power you take from them.

They tried that grid access fee here in the US Virgin Islands $25.00 month. We have so much outages here many went off grid so they removed the fee. However we went to net billing which replaced net metering.

Energy companies are being like blockbuster. The Netflix of power production is happening. If they are smart, they should get into the home solar business. As the cost of solar systems get cheaper, people are going to cut their relationship with the power company and that will be it. The argument they are making is not very fair. The cost of solar production is fixed, but gas prices fluctuate. So even if they don't want to do the net metering, they should offer a better rate to the home producer. Essentially, they are going to be profiting off the electric that is coming from solar generated from homes, but not compensating the home owner appropriately

I have not been on grid power in over 3 years and the price i was paying monthly for power paid for my battery bank in 3 years. We are not required to have anything here other than trash pickup.

I can't spend that much overnight

This is why I installed my own off grid system I just used a generator transfer switch. Eventually the utility will only power a porch light only because I'm required to keep my home connected to the grid. Solar contractors charge as much as $8 a watt because they are looking to get rich and sell it to you as a 30 year mortgage. Reality is you can install a 10KW grid tied system using micro-inverters permitted and utility commissioned for less than $10k. Company called Greenlancer that will do all the design work for you and help you submit to the city and utility your design. You can find used 400-watt panels, and microinverters cheap online. Rest is just basic home electrical work.

It's interesting when you take a solar looan from the solar company installer how the price is greatly increased my suggestion is look look at taking home equity loan for that purpose and pay off the to the solar panel provider.

Texas Coserv was supposed to be net metering. No bueno! They rip us off. As soon as I starting using my Enphase 2 Encharge 10 batteries my electrical cost went down substantially.

I have been researching solar in NJ. I live in SJ, they are literally not allowing new solar projects in huge portions of SJ. I have been researching going off grid and using a natural gas generator as a backup and to recharge a battery bank when there is no sun. Most if not all of the solar companies will only work with you if you are doing a grid tied system. Don't even get me started, but truth is grid tied systems are not the future. But its expensive and sadly most people will never be able to take full advantage of solar because they can't afford it. An added note, they will not even allow the system to be energized, so you have to be completely disconnected.

Even "locking in" would not be for life of the system.

I don’t understand. My NC home system was installed in 2019. Do I get to keep my 1 for 1 net metering plan for the life of my system? What if I sell my home? Will the buy keep the 1 for 1 plan?

I'm curious about Duke Energy's profits recently and how that plays into this decision.

I hope NY specifically Central Hudson doesn't go down this path but if they do that it is similar to the California program where one is grandfathered in to the original net metering plan for 20 years!

From what I read, you can’t lock lifetime net metering if you install now, you will be forced to go TOU in 2027. So info in this video isn’t correct.

Its almost like the utility companies dangled a carrot so residential solar owners could mortgage their short term debt. Couple that with the high interest rates, the ESG incentive continues to dwindle. Time to let these governors know that they are losing votes over this.

Dear Joe, you look like the damn near identical twin of one of my project manager coworkers. you are the spitting image of him and vice versa. cool guy. take care.

Utilities were forced to go into net metering by their public utlities commissions. The huge tax credits made solar very attractive to customers who were being billed in the upper tiers of the rate structure. In California utilities were forced to offset costs to base rate customers by over charging those in the upper tiers. Solar pulled the rug out from under the commission's schemes because people who were being overcharged were happy to install subsidized solar to drop their usage into the lower tiers. The implementation of net metering by the commission caused other problems for utilities who are required to provide both reliable and economical power supplies to their customers. In California there was no control over how much solar could be installed and with the subsidies and net metering the state has become a real problem for utilities and the public utility commission to provide both a reliable and cost effective power supply. Costly batteries needed to supply electricity when the sun dies not shine would drive up utility cost unfairly and that was why the net metering is being changed to require solar installers to put in batteries that would otherwise have to be installed by the utilities. California is going to be in a real mess as the nuclear plant and remaining fossil fuel plants are shut down. On top of all that the addition of EV's ads even more problems if they are charged up at night when the sun does not shine. Rates will continue to go up as California tries to go all in for green energy.

My solar system was installed 2-years ago. Am I going to be effected with this change in 2027?
