Sometimes people who are so strict on expiry dates and cleanliness are sicker than those who are not.

Here's a more detailed explanation for those interested. (pssst please pin me😏)

Basically yoghurt is a fermented product. Fermentation is when bacteria gets into your food and start eating it and produce other chemicals from the food (unlike molding, mold means it's mushrooms instead of bacteria).

The thing is some bacteria produce toxins or bad tasting chemicals that make the food "go bad", others produce stuff like lactic acid in case of yoghurt, which is delicious and perfectly safe to eat!

Yoghurt is made in sterile environment where only the good and tasty bacteria are allowed to eat milk and turn it into the yummy yoghurt. So that means yoghurt already is full of bacteria AND it also is acidic, both of these things make it really hard for the other bacteria or molds to get into your yoghurt.

After you open your yoghurt there is a very small chance of something bad getting inside it and winning with the good lactic bacteria so you should always look out for change in color, smell or taste in old yoghurt!

The label with the date means "Best before" and companies are forced to put that on their product it does not at all mean it will go bad after that date.

Fun fact: this also means you can get some milk add yoghurt to it leave it covered in your fridge for a few days and you have more yoghurt! :O
This has the chance of failing and the milk will go bad because other bacteria/molds will invade and win with the good ones but the likelihood of that happening is really low!

The rotting and sickening smell coming out of my yogurt box tells me otherwise

that’s a big caveat… it’s quite easy for bad bacteria to eventually get in there. maybe it’s a good idea to include more info about the potential dangers. you don’t want a stranger to get hurt.

I am not a doctor but wouldn’t encourage eating expired milk products. My uncle ate expired yogurt and he almost died.
