Capping a stunning comeback from a career-threatening injury, Mutaz Barshim successfully defended his world high jump title before a near-capacity crowd at Khalifa Stadium.

It was Barshim, the 2017 World Athlete of the Year, who was these championships’ unofficial poster boy ever since the Qatari capital was named to host these championships in 2014. That’s a lot of pressure for any athlete to carry, never mind one who suddenly found himself sidelined by a serious ankle injury just 14 months before the start of the championships. Ruptured ligaments and a subsequent surgery in July of last year began what turned out to be a frustrating race against the calendar, and then against the clock.

What a pleasure for Barshim to defend his title after a whole lot of injuries and in front of a very supporting home crowd. Well done!

41:00 The build-up to this jump and the home crowd's reaction in the background gave me chills. Absolutely clutch performance by Barshim!

Barshim defied all odds coming into this World Championships. Everyone thought his career would be over after the injury, yet he rose to the occasion and won in front of his home crowd. What an athletic hero he is!

First man to successfully defend the high jump title.
It's clear though he has not broken the world record. The fact remains he has jumped over 2m and 40 cm for six successful seasons.
It's also a record of his own no other has done of all times
And I believe now even Olympics next year the title is his if these guys don't train hard to beat him one needs to jump above 2:40
Evidenced in this worst season of injury and surgery and a season best best if 2:25 he comes on the big event with 2:38. Now even if inanyuk also jumped it he would still win it coz he jumped it on first attempt or he would even go for 2:41
Barshim is the king of high jump

In this competition I got to know Barsim for winning the gold and Tamberi for the looks and now both of them are 2020 Olympics champion.

Barshim gets his hips rotated faster than any high jumper i've seen. His hips are above the bar so fast you miss it!
