Gianmarco Tamberi put on another dazzling show for his home fans in the men's high jump at the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships.

Not only did Tamberi win his third European title but he also cleared a world lead and championship record of 2.37m!

Sotomayor can rest easy knowing Barshim, the only guy who’s ever come close to beating his world record, is now well past his peak. These guys are competing for the medal, but they’re all miles off 2.40m.

How long before Tamberi is President or prime minister of Italy?

Barshim is second best high jumper of all time clearing 2.40m at his peak more than once and with a PB of 2.43m. No one else has even come as close to beating Sotomayors record of 2.45m, but that was a few years back now. Tamberi is the best right now, but he’s somewhere off jumping over 2.40m and competing against a Barshim who’s well past his peak.

The technical level of this high jump event is weak. In fact, the overall technical level of high jump today is far from what it was in the early 90s, with Javier Sotomayor, Patrik Sjöberg, Artur Partyka, Hollis Conway, Tim Forsyth, Charles Austin, Stefan Holm, Igor Paklin, Dietmar Mögenburg, and other great jumpers.
