I always recall the words sung at the Easter Vigil, the Exaltant: "...o happy fault ..."
I've only known the Thomistic view since becoming Catholic over 25 years ago.
This makes perfect sense to me.
Without atoning for sin God could become Man so that our mortal bodies can ascend to God.
