This is probably the least optimized way of typing in VR! Please note that QWERTY was designed about 200 years ago for a mechanical typewrite. Is there any reason why we should continue with that legacy, especially when it proves that it's demonstrably (and agonizingly) s  l  o   w     e     r     than other technologies created for touch or VR text entry?

The problems of text entry on a touch surface (and VR, by extension) is best summed up by Fitts' Law which roughly translates into key sizes and their distances. So using QWERTY (the worst arrangement for this according to Fitts' Law), you'll end up spinning your wheels going back and forth, left and right, typing at snail's speed. A better arrangement of keys and a better key-distribution scheme can increase the speed (and decrease the anguish) of the user by at least one order of magnitude.

there's no point here with Google keyboard it there's no sweeping to type. in VR, that would be an awesome necessity because you could basically just use natural paint-like gestures to type and it would be not much harder to get used to than the original one for normal use. if you still have to type manually, it's just as difficult and tedious as typing in any other VR experience. I was actually considering trying it one of these daydream headsets to try it a feature like that, but I guess that's not going to happen.

this is definitely not simple nor easy process. Usability of keyboards are far more primitive than real ones.
