Throughout the years, I have used the Nesco (the one with the auger), the Gene Cafe (like the machine in the red), and the Hot Top next to it. The Nesco is still being made in Two Rivers, Wisconsin and does a fine job on small batches. You will not get a very dark roast with it though. The Gene Cafe which is made in South Korea has gone up in price from 495 when I bought mine to 585. The roaster does a very good job at larger batches (I've charged it with 12 ounces, and was able to hit the roast marks I wanted. The flip side is that bean mass absorbs a lot of heat which will have to be released, so it is easy to let an exothermic reaction get away if you don't think ahead. Chaff collection and exhaust is the best I have seen on any of the home roasters. It takes a while to cool down, as the temperature has to reach a consistent 140 degrees. That is coming from over 400 degrees.

The Hot Top has gone up substantially in price from the B2 I paid 750 for to the B2K model at 1100, and the only difference between the two is the temperature probe which switched from a button type to a K probe. When I had it working, it did a pretty good job roasting up to Full City. The cotton filters that slid in the back of the fan are 10 bucks a piece and are supposed to be replaced every 10 roasts. I had a couple, so when I was washing one, I had the other in the machine. The visibility of the beans during roasting is very good, and it cools the beans very quickly. It has a slightly lower bean charge than the Gene Cafe, but control is much more precise. I had thought about getting a replacement, but the price is a real turnoff.

There is a roaster out there called the Bullet from Taiwan that has the same amount of control as the top line B2K+ (1600 bucks), but has twice the capacity at least, and the cost is around a thousand more I think. I had considered getting one of these, but there is no distributor set up in the States. Getting it straight from the factory means no tech support here.

After years of griping and complaining about how poorly roasted most coffees are in my region (Houston area), I'm going to try my first attempt at coffee roasting at home. I've never researched the reason why coffees are poorly roasted but I'm guessing that commercial roasters are hiding inferior beans by over-roasting, resulting in charcoal, carbon tasting brews. Also, why do stores buy too much of any roast then let it sit for weeks getting stale. Small batches seems to be the way forward.
