Yeah my mom charged me rent at 18 which made it impossible for me to afford school, beeper Bill, insurance and car note. So I ended up joining the military. Now 25 years later she's old, broke and living in MY house. Yup, I'm charging her rent!!! 😅 She wasn't happy about it but I told her she taught me nobody lives for me. 😆

Here is a more sane way to handle this. Treat your kids like children, but then a few times every year while growing up pull them aside and teach them about finances. And if they want to buy something superfluous make them form a good argument for it and if it is well enough, buy it.
Also charging your kids rent is a terrible idea, you’re instilling the values that everything is transactional down to the closest of relationships, which might be true, but it’s very sociopathic. Additionally if he is above 18, you are making it harder for him to become financially stable while simultaneously keeping him as a dependent stunting his growth.

Ain't no way my parents will give me even a single penny for doing chores, they'll say "You're living unde MY roof, I f

When I was in third grade I lost my eraser a lot, so my mom gave me like around 40 bucks a month (300 HKD) for me to buy my own stationary, books and plan stuff, then I stopped loosing so many pens and erasers
Now the monetary concept is too deep in my head that I find myself too stubborn to buy stuff I really want and forget to live the moment by looking at the price tags too often

Yes you can take the money out of your savings to buy that doll, but if you take it out now, you'll owe me 40% of it. Why do you owe it to me? What do I have to do with the money you saved and you spent? Why would you owe me anything after I've already taxed you into debt? Sounds like someone wants to go to their room!
