Can a Volvo XC70 offroad | jeep grand cherokee & Volkswagen tourag epic off-road 4x4 adventure

first weekend of December and we have little to ZERO snow in southern ALBERTA. What better way to spend the weekend than trekking to some frozen waterfalls and cruising some trails. Will conditions allow a volvo xc70 be able to go where some jeeps get stuck?

Tires make huge difference - we did some serious off road trails in our XC70, loose sharp rocks, 6" ledges & 30-40% grades from 4000ft to 9000ft.... Not many issues, even ground clearance was OK. The Falken Wildpeak A/T Trails tires we have were fantastic off-road and dead quiet onroad.

Believe it or not the VW has one of the best if not THE best 4WD system (especially if it's the 4XMotion variant). Most come with locking differentials too. His driver wasn't doing a very good job spinning those tires on that hill slope.

Depends to 50% on tires and driving skills. We made the lion's back in Moab in 2010 with in XC 70 seeing an Hummer going down sideways😂😂😂😂

In the switchbacks, the advantage of live axel really shows in wheel articulation (Jeeps) vs independent suspension (VW, Volvo). Lift kits on Inde. Suspension can add ground clearance but adds very little articulation. When you have wheels off the ground, the AWD system have to do the work to send power to the wheels that have contact... and assuming the AWD system *can* send 100% of the power to wheel that have contact, that's still reduced contact and lower total traction compared to a vehicle that does better at keeping all four wheels in contact with the ground...

What can be done to improve wheel articulation on the VW and Volvo? Lift kit? Disconnectable anti-roll bars?

That is super impressive! I have a P3 XC70 and have taken it on some pretty rugged tracks, I haven't been game to the it on the serious off-road ones, but this make me tempted now!

Why does that white Rubicon look so weak? And it seems to me that you don't actually need a Jeep or heavily modified car to enjoy overloading/off roading. A XC70 on all terrain tires can do a very good job too.

If you have good tires, those trails should be no problem. Somertime all season tires don't work! If you are going to ice trails, studded tires are like magic.

That Volvo is awesome! I just got a 2010 xc70 I was wanting to take off-road too. Cant seem to find much on lifting the 3rd gen ones tho. Will probably have to downgrade to a second gen or get a grand Cherokee or something

Thats it, i am moving to Canada. Going proper offroading once a year isn't acceptable anymore. Where i live i am not allowed to use the 4" liftkit on the xc70.
