There’s no shortage of choice when it comes to small SUVs, and the Audi Q2 & Volkswagen T-Roc are two of the biggest players in the business. They’re both based on their respective hatchback little brothers (the A3 and Golf), but given Volkswagen owns Audi, the two cars share many of the same parts. So are there really that many differences between the two?

Join Mat in his latest head-to-head as he puts the Q2 & T-Roc to the test to see just which one of these premium small SUVs you should go for!

Awkward haggling is a thing of the past with carwow. Choose your perfect car with our configurator tool and let the country’s best dealers compete over you. I’ve just bought a T ROC. I love it, I bought it because I have osteoporosis and need a perch and swing in seat. I’m 73 so am getting a big old for a hot hatch, but have had my moments in Alfasuds. The T ROC allows me to put stuff easily in the boot, gives me all round good vision higher up than an Audi A3 or a Golf. I find it sporty enough for my needs. Agree the finish of the dash is hard plastic but.... do I really care? Not a lot

Drove both, preferred the T-roc over the audi. Don't care about plastics on the interior, it just drove better, felt better and in my humble opinion looked better. To each his own... :)

It'd have been great if it was a car with the Troc's exterior with the Q2's interior

Got the missus a second hand 2020 Q2 1.0 sport and it's great for her, we got a nice warranty deal for 5 years with the Audi dealership we bought it from. It had daft low mileage and was immaculate. The Audi is fab. I love it, nice comfortable drive and it's rock solid on the road the breaking system is the sharpest I've ever had on a vehicle and it's safe as houses. iThe steering is nice and responsive, very responsive in fact. It feels professional if that's the right word, or 'classy'.
it's also more fuel economical than our old 1.3 ten year old Corsa!!
Yes some of the trim is a bit plastic'y but the breaking, suspension and engine system is where the engineering is. We tried Seat (too rubbery on the road) Renault (too sluggish) and Toyota (too cheap feeling) and various other makes and none of them felt like the Audi to drive.
Massive boot space and comfy interior.
It's comfortable, has a fair bit of poke to the engine, feels more like a 1.3/1.4 engine and is very very comfortable. I keep the old banger and she has the Audi. Luckily she looks after it and it doesn't do huge amounts of miles. A good little car to pick up second hand for a good price, but a good warranty is worth getting if you can preferably from an authorised dealer rather than a 'car warehouse' type retailer.
Yes, there's a lot of expensive upgrades and such like, but I'd never buy a car like this brand new! If i was looking for more luxury I'd have gone for a second hand Q3 sport version but we don't need a bigger and more expensive to run car.
Bonus's with the Q2 include a cheaper insurance, road tax and London congestion charge exemption because of it's low emission engine! :)
A belter of a little car, or not so little depending on your view...

T-Roc looks better imo.
Bet only reason they made the interior cheaper is not to overlap the Audi.

If Mat teamed up with a manufacturer to design and build the perfect car then the dashboard would be padded, the boot would have no lip, the back seats would fold exactly flat, there would be no fake exhaust, you would be able to carry water bottles inside every door, the C pillars would have 'opera windows' in them, the centre console would be solid as a rock and there would be enough headroom for abraham Lincoln to ride in the back wearing his top hat. What did I miss?
I do think Mat should design a car though, I would buy one rather than something Pininfarina churned out.

T-Roc for me out of those two! Plus I can’t ever remember getting in any car and scratching or banging the dash board? So for me it’s not enough of a reason to go for an A2 instead! Good review though

I have had a Q2 Sport for just under a year and although I find the ride a little firm overall I would recommend it as it is lovely to drive and full of great technology.

I love our T Roc. Made one mistake though, could have ordered the key fob auto open /close hatch/boot for £300, it requires a firm pull to close without and it’s the only thing we regret not ordering. To aftermarket fit one is £1200 so if you dithering over the options, do order the remote close. You won’t regret it.👌

I have driven both. The VW feels slower off the mark and less dynamic when it comes handling, the handling on the Q2 40 TFSI is superb and feels like a true hot hatch. The interior on the Q2 feels and looks fancier, the multimedia system is non touch screen though, but I personally like that, since I don't like using touch while driving, just feels unsafe. The VW has the more sophisticated exterior from the front IMHO, but the Q2 with a black grill matches it in this respect. I ended up getting the Q2 and I absolutely love the drive, what did surprise me though is it consumes up to 50% more fuel than the claimed 6.5L when driving in the suburbs, you're realistically looking at 9.4L/100 if not higher, they really should force car manufacturers to perform more realistic fuel consumption tests.

I couldn't care less about scratchy plastic, it's all good to me!

Q2 is more aggressive and feels more comfy to be in :)

Unfortunately the Q2 still has that ye olde pop up screen in the centre of the dash. Except that it doesn't pop up, or down - it fixed.
Why are car reviewer obsessed with hard plastics in cars. When was the last time anyone stroked the top of the their dash.

The TRoc R looks good. Here in France ‘troc’ means bartar or exchange like a jumble sale or other second hand goods depot. 🤣. Maybe i will wait for a ‘troc troc r’

The Q2 actually looks good in this spec. The rims also do the trick. Too bad I already saw way too many entry level ones that looked really awkward..
