Poland save Haiti

A true but little known story from the Haitian Revolution. Late in the war, things were looking grim for sketchy old France, with much of their army dying of Yellow Fever. But France had one trump card—a powerful Polish Legion, who fought for France in hopes that Napoleon would help to restore Polish independence. But the Poles were told that it was a prison revolt in Haiti, not a war for freedom… When they got there, members of the Polish legion saw clearly what was happening—they realized this was Haiti fighting for freedom from enslavement, and it reminded them of their own struggles for freedom against Russia, Prussia, and Austria. Many of the Poles switched sides, and helped the Haitians in their fight! When the war was over, and Haiti freed (sort of; more on that in a future video) Haiti gave the Poles full citizenship in the Haitian constitution.

If anybody doesn’t know, Napoleon sent a legion of 5000 polish troops to Haiti but then started to help the rebels.

That part where Poland started to fight for Haiti made me feel patriotic for a country I’m not even a part of.

This is true. As a Haitian person, I’ve been to parts of Haiti where there is a polish village. They are the only white ppl who can buy land in Haiti 😂 even tho the constitution says no white person can, they are the exception.

Fun fact, after Haiti gained independence, the Polish soldiers and their descendants were christened 'honorary blacks.' Meaning, under Haiti's new constitution (which was obviously in favor of black people), the Polish soldiers and all their children would be legally defined as black, regardless of their actual skin color.

*sigh* It sums the history of Poland pretty well. That's why Polish Army banners have motto "For Freedom Ours and Yours." on them.

That’s why there’s an important saying that I heard a lot these days:

“Side with the oppressed than to be with the oppressors”.
