I like your design. Simple and easy. I make my own reducer as well. It is of the insert design but I leave about 1/8 of an inch sticking out so it can be wedged out with hive tool. I also drive in a small screw that can caught by that special keyhole punched into the hive tool as well. So no need for a hammer to install or nails to loose or break.

You are correct. Your way is a lot easier to install and remove.

I use a screened top cover and bottom board here in S. Louisiana and I leave my entrances reduced year round.
