i think the reason you were getting fall damage (even when you were hitting the bosses) was because you weren’t “falling” because of your elytra

Take off your elytra when falling to kill the bosses. That's why you were dying. The mace negated the fall damage, but not the elytra damage

You were probably taking damage becaus you were flying, since the mace negates fall damage, not “kinetic energy” damage.
