I remember well visiting the tumulus with my father in the early forties. The caretaker gave us a key to the gate at the passage's entrance as well as two candles. For this he was rewarded with a tip of sixpence. He warned us that some scholars were referring to 'pagan' origins of the monument but he assured us that the builders were Christian! "There were never pagans in Ireland" he said.
