Braids are first known to have started in Namibia Africa around.3500 years ago in a small tribe amongst the women. Most African Americans are NOT descendants of this tribe and by their own cultural appropriation standards should not wear braids either!! The most popular braiding style of today is known as the"Dutch" braid popularized by the ancient Norse and Germanic Tribes and is not related to the African style of braids. Both cultures utilized braids for the same basic reasons, hygiene and to be able to keep their longer hair out of the way during battle. I know I said hygiene already but close to the scalp braids also known as battle braids were also very good at keeping pests out of the wearers hair and made them easy to see and remove also so kudos to two very different cultures who figured out the same very useful way to stay healthy and big free while looking fierce and good at the same time!! They both contributed something very special to our modern world and we should all wear a form of braids out of respect for them both!!!
