Not that braids are a specifically "black" thing, but Im reminded of something a traditional Polynesian tattooist once said to me. When I asked how he felt about all these white guys getting their traditions inked on them, that if he feels his culture is being diluted in any way. His point was something along the lines of "Yes, as you said, my traditions are walking off the island... what do I have to complain about? Someone has looked upon their own culture, many others and seen mine as the one worth adopting into their own life... why would I have a problem with that? Either my culture spreads out in one way or another, or it dies. Thats just the nature of these things." He was genuinely confused as to why I would possibly ask him that. That always stuck with me.

as someone who’s japanese, the traditional outfits are absolutely gorgeous and i feel proud that many people want to take part in our culture, as long as it is respectful. start pulling your eyes back or doing stupid shit like that and that’s a whole different story, but i would never say you can’t wear it bc you’re not japanese

I got my hair braided on vacation in Turkey when I was 10 because I loved the way braids looked. I was friends with a black girl that I met at the hotel, and when her mom saw my braids she was offended.. she was offended that we went to a hair salon and didn't ask her, because she would have braided my hair for free. I cherish these memories, they were so kind to me❤️

Fun fact: braids were invented independly in many places around the world as a way to keep our hair long, but not interfering with work

Cultural appropriation is only a thing in America. If you go to another country and wear their styles they typically love it. From what I’ve seen, many cultures in Africa even help you dress like them and braid your hair for you.

I always thought wearing something not from your own culture, whether it's clothing or hair styles, I always thought it was a compliment. If a non Korean wanted to wear our traditional clothing, I would say thank you for liking the clothes enough to wear it.

They scream for cultural diversity yet scream against sharing that culture.
Sharing culture breeds understanding of each other and people coming together. Braids come from many cultures so you can't claim it as your own.

I grew up in a small town in Portugal where black people would braid our hair. Always saw it as a really nice cultural exchange and appreciation moment, watching white little girls running around all happy with their braids. Never knew that cultural appropriation was even a thing until I met the American people online.

In South Africa, we have a national day called Heritage Day, literally any, every person of whatever race, colour, socio economic class, ethnicity, religion actually wear and celebrate any culture of your choice. And when people see you taking part and celebrating their culture, it brings them so much joy, excitement and pride...It's called the spirit of Ubuntu. I think people need to recognize this and stop segregation of humanity in 2022.

Here in Spain there are black women everywhere who are willing to braid your hair even in the middle of the street. And people say “oh it is because they need the money” and sometimes, sadly, that is the case but the mother of a friend of mine works as a waitress and in summer she spends her morning brading little kids’ hair because she loves that they love it so much, FOR FREE. People just don’t see over their ego sometimes.

As an African, I never really knew why ppl were arguing over this, you wanna braid your hair, then braid your goddamn hair, you don't, then don't.

The only time about cultural appropraition is when a culture is taken up just for the sake of mockery and disrespect

Imagine a white person telling a black girl she can't straighten her hair or dye it blonde.
