WHO IS BUNCHARTED?

We're Michelle and Alex, an American expat couple living abroad in the Netherlands. 🇳🇱

In 2020, we quit our jobs to travel the world, and... well, that didn't happen. So in 2022, we decided to make an even BIGGER change: to pack up our lives (and our cats 🐈) and move from Austin, Texas, in the United States, to the Netherlands. Subscribe for new videos like this every week!

Indonesian food is unmatched and in Europe practically only available in the Netherlands. Which makes the Netherlands number 1 in Europe when it comes to food. You can keep your pizzas and boef bourgeon.

I am living 24 years now in spain and in my group of friends are 2 dutchman married with woman from Sumatra. Both are grannies 80 and 82 years old. And they make every 3 months a pasar malam festival foof for our 30 persons group. We put in every week €10, - each and those oma, s are living the dream of preparing the food. My Nr 1 is Beef redang, 2 Sate in any taste, way or form and 3 The lemper with pineapple, chickencurry inside. When my wife let go the leash on my i will eat 10 of them in a blink of a eye. The Martabak that those 2 oma, s are making are heavenly good.Selemat Makan

My fav Indonesian food is Daging Smoor. It is comparable to Rendang, and it is one of the few dishes that make me deviate from my otherwise vegetarian lifestyle.

Now we're talking! Food from "My people!" The "Indo's". We always joked that Indo stood for: "In Nederland Door Omstandigheden" (In the Netherlands due to circumstances)

The Indonesian cuisine and the rijsttafel tradition have been added to the Intangible Heritage of the Netherlands
This intangible heritage is part of the socio-cultural community that has its roots in the former Dutch East Indies, ” the foundation said. “Over the years, the older generation passed on the knowledge of the Indonesian rice table, including the skills and preparation thereof, to the younger generations.” My mother learned Indonesian cooking from her neighbor. I learned it again from her and from my girlfriend's family and my sister-in-law. It really is part of our food, Indonesian dishes.
Selamat makan 😊

I'm proud to be Indo. I'm a 2nd generation Indo, my parents were of the generation that migrated (or ex-patriated depending on your point of view). One of the things I love the most about being Indo is that we always have enough food to share. Show up unexpected around dinner time and you WILL be invited to stay for dinner. And you'll gladly accept because Indonesian food is delicious!

Pisang Goreng (fried banana) is my favorite snack! And the best way to eat kroepoek is by using it as a spoon to eat the rest of your Indonesian dish.

I'm Dutch with Indonesian heritage. My mother always talked about my great great grandmother who was a slave on a plantage (farm). Never believed that story until my mother had her DNA tested. Ever since then I'm proud of my Indonesian heritage and I also think that it's probable that 10% of the Dutch have Indonesian heritage (and will do a murder for Chinese/Indonesian food).

This episode was so exciting. My grandfather was in the Royal Dutch-Indonesian Army and thus my father was born on Java. Going from there we at home ate more Indonesian based dishes than Dutch based at home. The saté topic got my attention since you tried saté gambeng (goat saté and truly my favorit). The regular saté is pork and the lighter saté is ajam (chicken). The sticky rice cubes you ate, you will find in more dishes or soups even, the best soup is Soto Madura (if you haven't had it go and try it out in somewhere in Den Haag because that's where the majority of Dutch-Indonesian immigrants settled). Why I get so excited is that the Indonesian kitchen is (like the Phillipine kitchen) intertwined with other Asian cuisines (far out Chinese but Indian as well) and therefor exciting in flavors. I can't imaging that there isn't a appetizer, dish, soup, dessert that doesn't meet the standard of any person on earth. If I haven't said already: keep it up, you're doing very well picturing us as Dutch.

So let me give some name explanation: Babi= Pork , Ajam/ayam, Ikan= fish, Kambing= Goat Daging=Beef Goreng=Fried Loempia= Springroll Telor=Egg
If you order Rendang or Nasi Rames you usually get also Serundeng= a mix of coco, crispy baked onion and roasted peanuts.

The white "ricecake" is called Lontong. The goat sate is called Sate Kambing. For me, as a real Dutchman, the Indonesian kitchen is my favorite. I cook it always at party's and holyday's.

Yes the saté (both chicken and pork) is usually marinated (in ketjap with all sorts of spices added to it) prior to it being grilled. So it’s not just the smoke that adds to the flavor: it’s the marinade.
