The MASSIVE Inequality of Flying (Part 10: Sustainable Aviation)

Flying is the fastest way we can burn fossil fuels and produce greenhouse gas emissions. It is also a highly unequal activity as only 2% to 4% of the global population flew internationally in 2018, and only 1% of world population emitted 50% of CO2 from commercial aviation.

Private jets are even worse as they are 5 to 14 times more polluting

Carbon Budget 'bucket' animation was taken from the Global Carbon Project:

We also know that 'Negative Emissions' technologies such as 'Direct Air Capture' and 'Bioenergy Carbon Capture & Storage' may prove a cure worse than the disease:

So what government policies do we need?:
- recognition of the total climate impact of aviation (CO2 + non-CO2 impacts)
- constraints on frequent flyers and private jets - e.g. bans or higher bands of taxation, e.g. using a 'frequent flyer levy' or similar measures.
- bans on offsetting and biofuels as a primary 'emissions abatement measure' - both have been shown to be ineffective at reducing emissions

Without these measures, the cost of our emissions today, will be passed on to future generations - our children - for them to bear the brunt of climate change risk and costs.

Finlay you've outdone yourself. An informative video as always but a dodgeball reference as well? Love it

This series of videos by an aircraft-aerospace engineer, a "Star Citizen"™ in the tradition of USAF Col. Murphy ("Murphy's Law"), is truly impressive. A "crash course" to get Earth off a "crash course!" Lucid, succinct, and informative all the way through, with helpful graphics. Truly amazing that jet fuel is not even taxed at all, when ALL the world's population, Elites included, is subject to negative climate effects. His takeaway conclusions: "We need far stronger policies to reduce frequent flying and curtail the use of private jets. We also need to make sure that 'The polluter pays.' ... Exactly as recommended by the [UK-based] Citizens' Assembly. [We, the People, and representatives] should listen to them!"

At 0:10 of your video, you state that "a return flight from Europe to New York generates roughly the same amount of emissions as the average European heating their home for an entire year." My understanding is that most airlines are currently using a mix of synthetic fuel and conventional fuel in their transatlantic flights. Do you happen to know if that statistic refers to flights using just conventional fuel or to flights using a mix of synthetic and conventional fuels? Do you know what the current and projected emissions cuts would be for hybrid and synthetic airplane fuels as opposed to conventional fuel? Thanks in advance for your time and also for your valuable work!
