One such ambitious project is our star today: the X-44 Multi-Axis No-Tail Aircraft – a.k.a., the Manta. But, why name it Manta? Here’s the scoop: the X-44 belonged to the “X-Plane” series, a collection of experimental aircraft pushing the boundaries of flight and tech.

So, what was the Manta aiming for? It had two bold missions. First, it wanted to be the first tailless manned aircraft capable of steering by redirecting its engine thrust alone.
