TTartisan 50mm 1.2 Review

TTartisan is back with a new wide aperture APS-C prime lens for Sony e-mount (but also available for other mounts, such as Fuji and m4/3). When last TTartisan and I met, I tested out their 35 1.4, and found it to be optically stellar for the price and size. Does the new 50mm f/1.2 measure up? Let's find out!

Man, this lens is really small and sturdy. The aperture ring and focusing ring are extremely smooth. When you open the aperture all the way, the bokeh is amazing. At f1.8, the sharpness is not bad at all. From my experience using it for a year, the sharpness is more than enough. Regarding purple fringing, it has almost no impact when taking portraits. The main issue is in street shooting, but if you just shrink the aperture a little, it's no problem. It's really good value.

Such an aesthetically pleasing review from you as always. Thanks for your hard work. I personally would like to try a Helios lens . Everyone says that their image character is truly unique.

For the aperture blades, I think TTArtisans was copying the Zeiss C Sonnar f/1.5. It has the same 10-blades with very similar curves as you stop it down. Also for the rendering, they seem to have copied the Sonnar, maybe. Sonnar is, of course, a vintage optical design known for good rendering of subject/background transition and creamy bokeh, rather than swirly.

Great review. I was looking at using this lens for video, mainly to add interest to a 3-camera shoot of live acoustic music. But then you compared it to the old Minolta 50mm which I already own. I think this bottoms out at 1.7, so I didn't think it would be different enough from my modern Sony zoom to provide a big contrast. But now you have me thinking that I should give the old girl a go. Would that be your choice? Many thanks whatever.

I bought the Nikon 50mm 1.8G and compared it with the Yongnuo 50mm F1.8. The Yongnuo is just a copy of the Nikon but $70 and only with more light flaring and just a little bit sharper... Very light 150g. The light flaring is the problem of all cheap lenses and the chromatic abbreviation. When the chromatic abbreviation comes from Nikon it is acceptable! The Nikon 50mm F1.8G is so bad on chromatic abbreviation that even the Yongnuo is not worse. That is about all lens reviews... Nikon and Canon lenses must be good and the cheap lenses must be bad! Remember that, otherwise, the testers don't get money from the big brands! The build quality of the Nikon and Canon Crop sensor cameras is the worst, still, the other brands must be worse!

Wes, giving a manual lens "O" for lack of autofocus is just silly. You need to reconsider that. Otherwise, a pretty good review.

I am buying my first manual lens, and I am confused between ttartisan 50mm 1.2 and ttartisan 35mm 1.4, I need a lens for night, street and some good portrait, which one you suggest

Only my experience (which may be irrelevant for the kinds of photography one may do) with the one I got.
-Excellent.
-With the Fuji X system: easy to manual focus; focus ring is smooth. I have many years with manual focus so no big deal.
-Clicked aperture ring; nice and smooth.
-The first 75mm FF equivalent lens I like and am now using it a lot to isolate subjects from the background.
-Excellent value for money.
-I don't do paid gigs with this lens but would not feel limited depending on the job.
-Fun to use and one of those kinds of lenses where I previsualise well with it.
-Good colour and b&W rendition.

How does this compare to the 7artisans 55mm f1.4? Thanks

Thanks for the video! Really nice reviews. I cannot decide between this and Pergear 50 1.8
Which one do you prefer? I've read some reviews where people mention that this lense compared to Pergear is better, however Pergear has that specific character (I have their 25mm and I really like images I get from that lense).
Does this one have vintage feeling to it? Thank you!

I just got this lens and will compare it with a dusty Minolta MD 50mm f1.4 and clean Minolta MD 50mm f1.7.

Weather sealing is just another hype for selling a lens especially on Sony’s as proven in other YouTube videos
0 score for AF ? It doesn’t claim to do any kind of AF on the lens box or spec sheets your supposed to be reviewing a budget manual force lens?
It offers exceptional value for money with a 0.95 aperture for light gathering it doesn’t mean you have to shoot wide open !
Plenty of Sony lenses have to be returned for recalibration at more than 10x the price !
We’re you not able to calibrate the focus yourself on the 35mm 0.95 lens
Good reviewers have a open mind on what they budget lenses offer no derogatory petty remarks
But you are a Sony user so nothing is going to better it no matter what brand or price
I’m guessing most Leica lenses score 0 as well if they are manual focus ?
Just what do you want for that price ?
