Ironically I was originally an Aternos user, untill turned out I can't just download ALL of my backups at once.
Then I manually recreated the server environment on my Asus TUF laptop and port forwarded it.

Currently I host the server on 1.21 with MODS and Geyser proxy, which allows both Bedrock and Java players to connect and play.

If you care about the "security risks" that come with local hosting then this mod does not solve that, its not like vanilla servers are "insecure". Just like vanilla servers can have exploits, this mod can have them too

Essential is proprietary software, and has a lot of added bloat that is better done with other mods, E4MC is a better open source alternative + your friends don't need to have the mod installed.

Essential isnt that good as you have to be online for your friends to play as its hosted through your world save. Also the server can experience severe lag sometimes

As someone who's used Essentials for a while, this works really well whether you're running a modpack or just vanilla Minecraft. Like he said though, it's ideal to have someone withthe highest PC specs (especially processing power) to host.
The only downside is that the server can only run if the host is actively running it.

The problem is that its a closed source mod which for some people may be a big no no.

I wish we could host servers with a click of a button how bedrock has it and how all games on steam have it.

Its better to use E4MC, Essential just shoves way too much crap in your face, most cosmetics costing *real money* to use, and honestly theres other emote mods out there, plus, with mods that modify the main menu, it can conflict.

E4MC is just SO MUCH simpler and lightweight, you just start lan world and boom it gives you a server ip you can send to friends and they can play with you. And only the HOST needs the mod (to get the server ip obviously).

I much prefer Aternos, as Essential is just making a LAN world available to the internet.

The thing that's nice about actual servers is that anyone can play whenever, you don't need the host player online to play on the server.

Btw don’t use essentials instead use E4MC. It does the same thing essentials does but better and without cosmetics!

The security risks of making your own server are minimal, as long as you change the port and use a whitelist
I recommend MC Server Soft as an interface, but you can quite easily run a server entirely from the terminal if you want

Ngl, hosting your own server from a pc/laptop being used by nobody is better. You can set up the security yourself, and will not have to worry about the people at essentials taking your data at somepoint when they become corrupt greedy mod makers. And to anyone saying that all mod makers are corrupt and greedy, your wrong. There are good people out there. But the people at essentials? Im not sure, they have added the cosmetic feature from bedrock to java, and those cosmetics are limited. But anyways, Figura is much better for cosmetic wise. Hosting your server from a pc at home is a much better option, especially if you watch a simple tutorial on how to set up security measures for your home server. There is also some wifi routers that secure everything much more, so less risks.
