00:00 Intro
Barn owls are nocturnal over most of their range; but especially in Great Britain and some Pacific Islands, they also hunt by day. Barn owls usually mate for life unless one of the pair is killed, whereupon a new pair bond may be formed. In this video we’ll see about the 3 species of barn owls that are found in India.

00:33 Andaman Masked Owl
Is a kind of Barn Owl endemic to the South Andaman Islands. The species is yet be evaluated to understand their conservation status. Their body length is 12 to 14 inches, wingspan is 10.2 inches, and tail length is 4.3 inches. Their plumage is dark Reddish Brown Above, having an Orange Brown Facial Margin, and Dark Speckles on their dull Cream coloured Breasts. Earlier they were considered as a subspecies of the Common Barn Owl, but later on has been recognized as a spate species. The legs are fully feathered to near the feet, toes are greyish-pink and the claws are purplish-grey. They are not a migratory species. They are nocturnal birds, roosting during the day and emerging at dusk. They feed on small rodents, probably nests in cavities, but details of their breeding habits are still unknown.

01:33 Australasian Grass Owl
Widely distributed species, also known as Eastern Grass Owl, Chinese Grass Owl or Australian Grass Owl found in South and North East India. Their body length is 13 to 15 inches, wingspan is 39 to 46 inches, and tail length is 11 to 13 cm. Their plumage is Tan-Brown Overall; with a Pale Beak; Dark Brown Eyes; Black, White and Orange Mottling on Wings. Females are larger, and weighs (460g) more than Males (400g). They prefer tall grasslands and swamps, roost and nests near flattened dense vegetation within systems of "tunnels" in the swampy areas. They commonly feed on Long-Haired Rat and Cane Rat. Probably they can breed at any time of the year if conditions are favorable. They usually fly low over grassy areas, primarily during dawn and dusk, often with long dangling legs. China, Solomon Islands, Taiwan, Australia and few more countries have Australasian Grass Owl on their postage stamps.

02:49 Common Barn Owl
Also known as the “White” or “Screech” owls and are most widely distributed in the world found in every continent, except Antarctica. They are distributed throughout the Indian subcontinent. Their body length is 13 to 15 inches, wingspan is 31 to 37 inches, and tail length is 11 to 12 cm. They are a Pale Owl; overall Orange with Grey Spotting Above; and have a Heart Shaped White Facial Disk. Globally, there are around 28 subspecies with considerable variation of size and colour. Unlike other owls they don’t hoot, but utters an eerie, or a drawn-out screech. They nest in tree hollows, old buildings, or fissures in a cliff. Female does all the incubation, while she and the chicks rely on the male for food. Females are ready to breed at ten to eleven months of age. Many countries have recognized the Common Barn Owls on their coins and postage stamps. Egg-laying usually takes place during the dry season, with increased rodent prey becoming available to the birds as the vegetation dies off. The actual dates of egg laying vary by year and location. Compared to other owls of similar size, the barn owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Therefore, barn owls consume more rodents.
