I headcanon the Mario games as just a way for them all to have fun. Mario and Luigi enjoy running through the obstacle courses, Bowser enjoys making the levels for the bros, and Peach gets a much needed vacation under the guise of being kidnappd (she probably just has a really nice place set up in Bowser's castle or maybe a portal a warp pipe to Isle Delfino there.)

What if Mario and Bowser followed the same logic. Like Mario's at a restraunt and runs into Bowser and he's like, "Mario! I just ordered, come and eat with me, I wanna bounce off some new enemy ideas off you for the next kidnapping and you can tell me about your last tennis tournament." And Mario's like, "Okie-dokie. But I'm paying since you covered me last time."

That also depends on which version of sonic and eggman you're referring to. For instance, the SatAM version of egg man was just straight-up carrying out genocide, wheras the egg man from *sonic boom* was a mal-adjusted dork with a grudge against his neighbor, and their respective settings and blue rat counterparts reflect that.
