“There goes that dream”

I’ve thought that to myself about 600 times in my life.

On the first watch of this movie I thought it was unfortunate that his last interaction with someone was this. As if this poor attempt at a relationship was his last hold on the world.

But on a subsequent watch I realized that the last thing he was actually clinging onto was Padraic's kindness. Padraic seemed to be the only person that would give Dominic the time of day, and Dominic seemed to look up to him. So when he hears that Padraic is capable of doing "the meanest thing" he's "ever heard of", you can see his view of Padraic and his hope for the good of the world shattering.

Dominic is shown to have some sort of mental deficiency, so it seems to a first time viewer that this a genuine attempt at a relationship, and he's just fumbling a social interaction as he usually does. But his reaction to getting rejected is "yeah, I figured not" and "Yeah no, I didn't think so". He opened up with "I'm glad I caught ya actually", and he leaves by telling her that he's gonna go back to that thing he was gonna do over there. It seems more like he just came here to do the deed and just happened to find Siobhan.

This scene ends up being less about him asking out Siobhan and more about him desperately trying to find something else to hold on to.

On first watch, this scene masks the real, insidious damage that Padraic causes. I think there's an interesting parallel to draw between Padraic and Colm. They both do something unnecessarily cruel to people who are unsuspecting, and 2 tangential lives are lost as an inconsequential result

Barry Keoghan is superb in this movie as Dominic. The nuances of expression, body language and vocalization. He truly deserved the Academy Award nomination.

“We’ll there goes that dream “ - a line so perfectly and delicately delivered.

I think the fact that not a single performance from this film won an Oscar is going to age terribly, and with Kerry Condon in particular it's especially egregious considering she was so far and away the best in her category.

Never expected this random drunk boy to be the most tragic character in the entire movie.

Like many, the world didn't offer much to those who deserved more.

Keoghan is excellent in this scene, but Condon is so sweet. It’s heartbreaking knowing he was offering her a chance to save him, but she didn’t know it.

It was one thing to see this clip on a film appreciation Facebook page out of context without seeing the buildup, but this was easily one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen on film in whole. Barry Keoghan played it so perfect.

This scene was so heartbreaking. Especially at 1:01 when he says "you probably wouldn't want to" as if he already is expecting her answer. Of course she owes him nothing and was as kind and caring as one can be in a rejection, but it still hurts to see him try to hide his pain especially given what happens after. We need to show hurt or awkward lonely men compassion, so they don't indulge in toxic behavior to themselves or others.

This movie had 10/10 acting all around, the whole cast is brilliant. Fuck the Oscars, this is movie of the year.

IMO, this was the scene that got Barry Keoghan the Oscar nomination. The awkwardness is palpable. It's sad, sweet, a little desperate. Ultimately, it's Dominic coming to terms with his dreams (and therefor his life) coming to a bitter end.

Barry Keoghan as Dominic is one of the greatest performances I have EVER seen in my entire life. Like, at 1:24, the touching his face, twitchings.... that is not just a heart broken, that is a mind shattered beyond any hope. Heat-breakingly tragic.
