Clio here! This is my booktalk for The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto which I felt warranted a bit of a longer chat than I can do in a regular wrap-up.
So that's why I created this informal book talk for it.

Took me half way through to begin to enjoy it. I didn't care for the third person narration (guitar) that was used a great deal. When I finish, I think I may have to do a reread. ❤

I like the sound of how much music is involved in the story. And yay for magical realism elements! I love when the reading comes easy because of the fast pace. But I get a bit frustrated when things solve a bit easily -- I just finished a book like that as well. And I get not wanting to have to suspend your disbelief so much. It sounds like this one could work well for some people, but maybe not one for me, hmm... I have heard a lot about this author but never read something by Bloom. I will need to do so at some point! I am glad this one will stick with you ^.^

my only complaint about this book is that the reveal of who the cloaked figure was in the end just didn’t make enough sense. had they hinted at her a few chapters before she was hinted at, i think i would’ve been not as disappointed. in my opinion, it makes much more sense for it to be like a guardian angel version of baffa to be following frankie, or no one at all to be honest, because the concept of someone being just a few feet away at all times while frankie grows up and develops his career just introduces a lot of plot holes. i think frankie has this realization at some point that was like “oh, without her, my life wouldn’t be what it is, i should forgive her” but i don’t really agree. it just makes more sense that it’s baffa he’s forgiving because baffa had to lie, and now that frankie is older and has a child of his own, he would understand a lot of the choices baffa had to make. i feel like the reveal just didn’t hit the way the author was hoping it would. frankie is learning about his life and his history from someone who literally abandoned him, someone who’s supposed to be like a pretty important role because she’s the one sharing all of this, but she’s not introduced well enough for that to come across, and there’s just no connection the reader has to this character, whereas there is one with baffa. she does barely anything to help him ( other than help him start his family, and help him at the woodstock festival, which i feel like she should’ve intervened way before it even got to that point, but plot and character development i guess ) and then she just asks for forgiveness? i can understand frankie feeling grateful because again, she helped him start a family, but i wouldn’t go as far as saying she made a HUGE impact on his life. maybe it’s all the little things she did that add up, and maybe i haven’t sat with it long enough and recall everything/reflect on the story. i did just finish it, and did also rush through it a bit, but i feel like my opinion won’t sway very much, which sucks because this does count against my overall rating for the book. i rate it like a 7.5 out of 10, the story overall was really beautiful. the way the author describes certain things is just really beautiful. i wish they’d make this into a tv show!
