Elijah Facts - According to the Bible

Elijah was a prophet and key figure in the Old Testament of the Bible. He lived in the 9th century BC and was active during the reign of King Ahab in Israel.

Elijah's ministry was focused on turning the people of Israel away from the worship of false gods and idols, and back to the worship of the one true God. He is known for his miracles, including the raising of a widow's son from the dead, and his confrontation with the prophets of the god Baal on Mount Carmel.

On Mount Carmel, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to see which God was the true God. The prophets of Baal built an altar and called on their god to send fire to consume their sacrifice, but nothing happened. Elijah then built an altar, poured water on it, and prayed to God, who sent fire to consume the sacrifice and prove his power.

Elijah was also known for his role in anointing Elisha as his successor. Elisha became a prophet in his own right, and carried on Elijah's work of calling the people of Israel back to God.

According to the Bible, Elijah did not die, but was taken up into heaven in a whirlwind. His departure was witnessed by Elisha and others, and he became a symbol of hope for the people of Israel, who believed that he would return to announce the coming of the Messiah.

Elijah is seen as a model of faithfulness and devotion to God, and his story continues to inspire people today to stand up for their faith and to trust in God's power and provision.
