Debating on moving to Salem from Indiana. I'm not LGBTQ+ but my family and I want to raise our kids in an environment that is accepting and open to all.

I moved to Salem in January, 2021. I did note the seeming cliques of people who have grown up together, but that must be true for most mid-sized cities. As of May, 2025, I'm still renting the same house. It's expensive. But after four years, I feel at home here. I don't participate in many of the local events, although I will stroll through the Saturday Market occasionally. There is, as everywhere, an affluent community of folks who will attend events, go to charity functions, become involved, and will make decisions that affect the populace. But as everywhere, they're not inclusive. If you don't have the money and access to power and privilege that those in that community employ, you're primarily a worker and consumer.

We visit Salem occasionally. I know not everything is perfect, there, or anywhere else. But I really appreciate its interesting and walkable historically preserved city center.

I moved to Salem a few months ago and I love it. I'm trans and have already seen other trans people here. I'm also old and feel safe here.

I know this may not be helpful to you as a real estate agent so I apologize in advance. My non-binary spouse and I are both bi so we're LGBTQ+ and we're trying to escape Texas. Actually the broader plan is to do some part time digital nomad kind of stuff so we wouldn't even live in the area full time. The question I have though is, where would you recommend setting up sort of a cooperative, low cost commune sort of environment where we could all live in either tiny homes, mobile homes, something cheap and yet a little land to garden on and work together?

We're childless couples, single people, etc and we're trying to kind of keep the cost of living to an absolute minimum while helping to take care of each other.

Is a suburb near Salem a good idea for that? Is there a better option than trying to buy land? We're also tech geeks with online businesses so access to high speed internet is kind of critical. Weird question I know, I'm just trying to figure out what we should do and how to approach it. It might involve buying land obviously, or maybe there's some existing community where we can rent lots instead of doing this from scratch.

Safety is obviously a concern.

I would have to say if you don't identify as homeless, a felon or gang member I would look elsewhere. It's hard for anyone to feel safe here.
