Get Default Values For Fields from a Table in your Microsoft Access Database. System Defaults Table.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to create a System Defaults table that you can use to provide default values for fields in your database that may change from time to time. This way you don't have to make design changes to your tables.

Santos from Casa Grande, Arizona (a Platinum Member) asks: I have to change the default values for some of our fields on a regular basis. For example, we have different loan rates that change from time to time. When we go to enter loans, we have to keep constantly looking up the rates. I've been manually going into the table and changing the default value, but that's annoying to constantly make design changes. Is there a way we could just store this value in a table and look it up? And this is just one value. I've got a bunch of them I need to change regularly.

Silver Members and up get access to an Extended Cut of this video. Members will learn how to make a custom function to supply a default value for something that's not as simple as a lookup, for example giving a default discount rate for customers based on how many years they've been a client.

This is similar to the app configuration used in Visual Studio except it is an actual table, I like it! Thanks 🙏🏿😊

Hi Rich, I'm trying to set a value to default to $0.00 so my calculated field can find the zero to complete the calculation. Every single thing I've tried is not working, from going into the properties of the field in the main table to setting the default in the form field properties. I downloaded your db and the default value for credit limit is 0, so I tried that. Doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

I can get this to work with a lot of different Data types, but I can't get it to work when I have a field formatted as scientific.

Thanks Rose!
Is this also possible to import values let's say from another table like students school years table as an archive to look up in the past years of the profil of the students keeping at the same time their curent records updated?

Hi Richard,

Great video as always thank you 👍

Question is there anyway to set a default value using a combobox in another form. I've set up a table that is BrokerT which contains all the names of the current brokers that work for the firm. In my defaultT table I've used lookup Wizard to pick up these brokers to use in a combobox in my BrokerSelectionF. However when I change the broker from the drop down combobox the text box in my NewLeadF shows a number instead of the broker name. I assume this number relates to it's position in the combo box?

This is the last little bit I need to figure out in my database and I'm pulling my hair out, please help.

Thanks in advance

Wouldn't it be easier to make a module with functions containing default values? Can you do queries in modules?
