03 November 2021 - Policy Dialogue
Speakers: Alexander Klatte, Expert energy and climate politics, German Steel Federation; Benedikt Herges, Head of European Government Affairs, Siemens Energy; Lucie Boost, EU Affairs Manager, Equinor; Mukund Bhagwat, Strategic Advisor Energy and Climate, European Copper Institute; Nicolai Romanowski, Energy Manager, CEFIC; Tudor Constantinescu, Principal Adviser to the Director-General, Directorate-General for Energy, European
Moderator: Eva De Francesco, Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre
Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and transitioning towards more sustainable societies requires a serious transformation of our energy system and changes to how energy is used across different sectors of the economy. In this context, there is a growing interest for exploring and enhancing the role of hydrogen in supporting electrification as a carrier and storage of clean energy. Hydrogen is also seen as a way to help reduce emissions, particularly in those sectors that are hard to electrify because of lack of technologies or the related cost (sometimes called ‘hard-to-abate’ sectors).
This Policy Dialogue explored the prospects and challenges in deploying hydrogen to enable the energy transformation and the greening of different sectors such as electricity, chemicals, steel and transport (road, maritime, aviation). A particular focus was put on the EU’s policies and sectoral proposals under the Fit-For-55 package.
This event is held under the auspices of the European Policy Centre’s Energy Platform.
