Quicker Solution:

- Select the Face
- Click on the "+" Icon int he Dropdown Menu on Transform Orientations. It creates a new Transform Orientation from the Normal of the Selection.
- In Object Mode, activate "Affect only Origins"
- Object - Transform - Align to Transform Orientation
Rotation is the hardest part.

- Snap or move the Origin to wherever you want to with "Snap to" command or "Move" and Snappinc activated with CTRL
- Deactivate "Affect Only Origin"

every time I tried to think of a solution for this problem I realized I needed to get the "job" done, spent triple the time to work around and forgot to look for a solution like

Blender needs a feature where you define 3 faces: up/down, front/back, and left/right and the local z, x, and y axis' snap to the normals of those 3 faces. I'm actually considering learning Python so I can implement this.

Ive been wondering about this!!! Exactly what I needed. I cant believe how difficult it is in Blender to reset the coordinate system. In SketchUp and engineering cad software I use, you just do 3 clicks to define the origin and XYZ planes.

For those who just want to manipulate an object's origin slightly, you do one of two things:

*1:*
- Be in *Object Mode*
- Click on your object, then right-click to open the *Object Context Menu*
- Click *Set Origin*

You'll now have a dropdown list of many ways to help change the location of the origin.

*2:*
- Be in *Object Mode*
- Click the *Options* drop-down located in the top right-hand corner of the *3D Viewport*
- With the *Affect Only* tickboxes, make sure only *Origins* is ticked

The object mesh will stay completely still, and you're free to move the Origin around.

i was looking for this solution most of the day. the only thing i don't like - it's to complex, too many steps. is there an addon that can allow me to rotate an object on an axis that i defined? sketchup had this solved very nicely. you drag along the edge to define the axis and then rotate around it. i want something like that in blender.

Really hope there's an addon to turn all that to a single click

How to re-align 3d camera (tracked) and planes to world origin after importing it from after effects ? As some of the planes are showing below world origin and some are showing above.

thanks.. great tip.. but being able to reset orientation of objects should be a built-in single click feature..

A year on and is this still the only method? As thats kinda bonkers especily with more complex objects.

All of the axis's for my object are off by a few degrees, Z is not straight up and down. X and Y are on wierd angles.
G+Z moves the selected vertices on an angle.
I never had this problem before until version 2.9
I now have to press Z twice to force it to move along the Z direction.
