Jaw Drop.

This song is so personal to me and your rendering is my favorite so far. My Norwegian grandmother used to play it. She had been through horrible things, leaving her beautiful country of Norway as a teen, for the hope of a better life in America. Alone and terrified, she was promised to be cared for by a seemingly romantic cowboy, who ended up being severely abusive to her and her children. He would leave her for months at a time with several children living in an old grain shed in North Dakota, during the Great Depression.

My aunt and uncles told stories of how she sang and danced and made joy in their home, despite their conditions. She told my mother that she would cry herself to sleep at night, knowing how her babies were nearly starving. The kids ate pancakes made of mostly water and a little flour, day after day and lived with no running water in the shed.

When the man finally died, she began to clean houses and things got a little better for her family. As an old woman, she lived in our home from my birth to when I was 12. She died of a vicious sinus cancer after multiple painful surgeries removing her eye, eye socket, and cheek. This meant that she lived years without the enjoyment of even chewing.

I share a snapshot of her story here because of the joy and love that she somehow brought to her children and grandchildren and friends, in spite of her many tragedies. She would wake ahead of us and when we got up, she would ask what we wanted to eat. It was the only old fashioned nurture I ever experienced. One of my earliest memories was her taking her big, soft hands and lathering my tiny ones up with a bar of soap and washing them and rinsing them in warm water with such care, speaking kindly to me.

As a little girl, I was able to visit Norway with my mom and I heard people talk about my grandmother's kind heart and unforgettable singing voice. I saw where she carved her name into a wooden beam in the basement of her childhood home, which still standing strong, painted white on a green hill. She was the most gentle soul with a strong faith that enabled her to take pain and make love, not bitterness.

Later, I used this song in tribute to her on my wedding day, to walk down the aisle to my husband. And if they follow my wishes, it will be played at my funeral.

Liebestraum no. 3 holds all sides of love, life, and goodbyes; expressed in one sitting. And this rendition demonstrates how it needs to be played. Mechanics mastered through knowing a piece, like knowing a lover, so that it can be played without seeming mechanical at all. Brilliant. Captivating. Unforgettable.

Bravo! I wonder how she managed to play that difficult piece with eyes closed. LOL. I could feel her emotions.

Although there have been many performances of this song, very few - if any - come anywhere close to Khatia.
