Gaps are often the primary concern of many patients and in orthodontics, space closure mechanics are routine.

In our space closure reboot, this adult patient experienced gingival overgrowth or gum enlargement even while excellent oral hygiene was maintained. With continued upkeep of great oral hygiene and more frequent cleanings with her general dentist, the gum overgrowth observed at the end of orthodontic treatment had returned to its normal condition. ⁠

While knowledge of space closure mechanics is required in the arsenal of any dental professional practicing orthodontics, the most challenging effort is to keep the spaces from opening again. Retention is key in space closure cases. ⁠

From the start of any case, soft tissue influences must be accounted for which includes frenal attachments, fibrous gingival tissues, and soft tissue equilibriums (Tongue vs cheek/lip). In many cases of generalized spacing, fixed post treatment retention is required along with removable retainers and an effective retention protocol to minimize relapse. ⁠
