About five Ukrainian brigades (A brigade consists of a few battalions and anywhere from 3, 000 to 5, 000 soldiers) have been wiped out in the city of Soledar. These losses do not include mercenaries. Quite a few of them were there. Soledar, like Artyomovsk, was a strategic transport hub. There were large amounts of ammunition in stock for the Ukrainian troops. The main benefit of capturing Soledar is the opportunity to open direct fire on Artyomovsk. Soledar was important from the perspective of isolating Artyomovsk. It means the cutting of supply routes for the Artyomovsk grouping and the cutting off of all opportunities to provide it with personnel and ammunition.

Zelenskyy as usual left several hundreds of his wounded and frostbitten troops in encirclement in Soledar. He apparently learned nothing from Mariupol and other disasters. Inadequate erratic Zelenskyy continues to pursue his nutty tactic of constantly throwing poorly trained (most don't have any training whatsoever; lucky ones have 5-week training at best. So poor fellows are just half-baked cannon fodder) Ukrainian reserves into a meat grinder and holding on to disadvantageous positions until it's too late. Even Zelenskyy's ambassador in London had to admit: "We’re losing people left and right" and called Ukrainian losses simply "incomprehensible". Erratic Zelenskyy is the gift that keeps giving for the Russians. Ukraine already lost most trained and motivated soldiers along with almost all hardware it had before the war (to understand the scale of losses it had 1 990 tanks, 1 212 IFVs, 1 112 heavy artillery systems, 354 multiple rocket launchers). Its army is a shadow of its former self at the beginning of the war. Mass summary executions for attempted surrender or unauthorized retreat just cause further demoralization and despair. Bakhmut is just the last instance of this insane tactic. Russians have 1:6 advantage in artillery according to WaPo of all places. WSJ is quoting Ukrainian commander in Bakhmut as saying: “So far body count "exchange rate” is strongly in favor of the Russians . If we carry on like this, we will rapidly burn through all our conscription resources.”
