Wanted to add something I've not seen repeated elsewhere. In the Japanese-american youtuber Dashblue's video (found here: /watch?v=rxydfYaAwjw ) his wife who is fully Japanese points something out (actually a whole slew of things the woman has eagle eyes, maxed out perception): They are giving Yaskue both clothes and a sword riddled with Nobunaga's family crest.

The issue? You have to ask for permission to use that, as that family IS STILL AROUND TO THIS VERY DAY. 100% chance they just went and added it thinking its fine because historical revisionism is fun.

Oh they also added the crests to banners in the game but then fucked up the format so its stretched out and cut off on the banners. This is a legit insult and would've had a banner maker killed for his insolence back in those days.

So not only have they just most likely not asked for permission, their lazy approach to things where they cut corners have brought a great insult to the Nobunaga family.

Not that they care of course, gotta shove the Message (tm) everywhere.

"Thank you for getting comfortable not owning [Ubisoft] games."
This is what they wanted, after all.

"using marginalized groups as human shields to protect themselves from criticism" that assessment is SPOT ON

AC Shadows is trying to out-Concord Concord.

I disagree with using their terminology of "people of color". Every human is a person of color.

They couldn't just ask one Japanese guy before making these ridiculous mistakes.

I thought I'm outgrowing gaming, but it turns out it's just the industry going the wrong direction.

The biggest problem with this game is not that it is historically inaccurate (as many AC defenders use the "it was never accurate" argument). The real problem is that Ubisoft is actively and a blatantly DISRESPECTING an entire country which in this case is Japan.

The Samurai character should've been another more well known Japanese historical figure. Yasuke would be great as an NPC that you help out rather than pick him as a center and placed ABOVE ALL JAPAN as the Samurai character in the Creed.

Didn't they say, "We're trying to be as respectful as possible towards Japan"?

1. Hiring a fake Japanese consultant (some say he's still half Japanese but don't care. Dude just trying to do damage control by basically saying "if you hate this game, you're not Japanese")
2. Tampering with Japanese history by bringing up a 'fanfiction' for the sake of "Inclusivity".
3. Stealing some assets without permission (the flag and Zoro's sword)
4. Proceed to make the character sit on the historical monument disrespectfully.

Ah yes, very *RESPECTFUL* .

8:21 unfathomably based. I’m really glad you put this in here as a counter against people who are against Ubisofts practices for the wrong reason (or are just straight up racist, sexist, or homophobic). Ubisoft is the one in the wrong here: not everyone else.

As a woman who's been playing games since the mid-late 80s, thank you for this. I've always had traditionally "male" hobbies but I never felt out of place or ostracized by the guys in those spaces growing up. The vast majority of the time if you're cool, the people around you will be cool. When gaming started to really become more mainstream in the 00s I saw a rise of things like women's gaming spaces, and I never felt the need to join. If I'm playing a game then I'm just a gamer, not a female gamer. I don't need to tie that part of my identity to my hobbies. I never felt the need to put all these labels on myself. Hell, I really don't even like being in anything that calls itself a community. I just want to enjoy my hobbies and interests without all the BS.
