This reminds me of my favourite scene from the manga After School Nightmare. There's a side character there that tends to the school garden. She routinely enters a shared dream with other classmates, but their dream selves show their true selves. In the dream she has a hole for a heart and a hole for a face, because she feels like she has no identity. One day she falls, but lands into the garden she so carefully tended. The flowers grow through her missing face and heart.
