Algonquin Park Solo Canoe Trip

This is the first video episode in a series documenting my solo canoe trip I did of the Northwest Loop (the furthest northwest canoe route in Algonquin Park). I completed the canoe trip in five days, in early August 2018.

In this video I paddle from Kawaywaymog (or Round Lake), across North Tea Lake and Sisco Lake to eventually reach Lorne Lake. Along the way I traverse several portages, including a gruelling 2km stretch from North Tea Lake to Sisco Lake.

Once on Lorne Lake, I set up my temporary camp where I spend the night before moving on and continuing the canoe trip. Oh, and there's a nice evening sunset paddle in there too.

The weather was perfect but because of the very dry weather this year there was a fire ban in the park.

I hope you enjoy this wilderness canoe trip-report style video of my solo canoe trip of the Northwest Loop in Algonquin Park.

If you do, please give it the thumbs up and leave a comment.
Thanks - Jason

Hi everyone,
This is the first video from my recent solo canoe trip on the Northwest Loop. It was a difficult trip with a combination of heat, long days of paddling, long portages, a thunderstorm and even sickness.
I wasn't sure how to edit the trip together, if I should create a video for each day or edit one video showing the entire trip. In the end I decided that there were so many different lakes, and so many struggles, along the way that I should show each day as it unfolded.
I didn't get all the footage that I would have liked or all of the camera angles, but I think what I have here does show what it was like for me to travel alone on this trip in my new canoe.
I hope you enjoy the video.

Thanks Jason! I FINALLY got around to starting to watch this series! Lovely!! Really enjoyed it - those portages sound brutal - I’ll never complain about our short ones again haha! Love the look of the Ugly Canoe - mine too is made from short strips- I got the cedar for nothing - left over from cladding a garage at work so not good quality - lots of imperfections and knots! So by the time I’d cut out the good sections, I was left with lots of shorter strips, yep staple city for me too!!
I’ve got to get over there some day - the tranquility, the vastness, the huge number of lakes, the loons! One day!! Thanks for sharing mate!

Enjoyed your paddle. Watched the buid video and it looked like you had the same shirt on for the entire stripping process, so I'm assuming you got the hull stripped in a day? Maybe that was not a time lapse and you're just that fast! Really inspired me to look at building one. Thanks again.

The view out over the bow are breathtaking.... wow!!!! I was on google earth looking the area over your at, and I think I saw you swimming?? A large white Lilly ass was shining in the lake. lol I would love to see some close ups of the scrap wood canoe. A good looking canoe!!! The 46 minute videos are great, I take a break mid way and come back to it. How did the sleeping go? Enjoying, w.w.

WOW Quite the portage!! I think that is the only part of canoe tripping that I don't miss! Oh yeah, the heat and the bugs I don't miss either! Your canoe is beautiful!! Ugly Canoe isn't the right name!!! How about Scrappy? LOL Another beautiful filming of a sunset! Look forward to the next episode of this trip! THANKS for taking us along! The canoe looks fantastic!
I miss the seclusion of the wilderness, but such is life. I’ll be back one day.

We did this route from Kiosk in 2019. Stayed at the same site on Lorne Lake, only the tree with the campsite sign had fallen down, and the sign was in the water, LOL! We really enjoyed that site. We did the route in 5 days, with 2 nights on Fassett L. I cannot recommend ANY of the sites on Shad. They are horrible and 1 has edge of park access by non-park users. Fassett Creek was definitely interesting (no spiders!). It was raining the whole time we were on it, too!

Great vid. Wondering what the weight of the canoe is ? I watched the build video the other day, but if it was said, I missed it. Thanks

Would prefer to listen to the sounds of nature rather than unnecessary music. Music ruins a nature trip like this! It's so annoying to have to keep muting and unmuting the sound.

Idk why but this vid gave me rdr2 vibes

What pfd are you wearing? Looks like it has a detachable pouch in front? It looks sweet! Nice job on the canoe btw. Looks beautiful! 👍

Wish I had found this video sooner! Just did the same trip this past weekend - luckily, Fassett Creek water levels were good. Even though it was Canada Day weekend, only encountered one other group doing this loop.

Nice video! I was in the area doing a solo trip August long weekend through North Tea, Biggar, Three Mile and Manitou. Beautiful area. You mentioned that the backcountry custom canoe isn’t a tripping canoe. I’m curious what you meant by that?

Jason Eke I like the daily approach. The whole trip crammed into on long video gets too lengthy.
