This song reminds me of the end of a war. Both sides taking turns singing about their sides of the aftermath of it all..

I think it would’ve been cool if the final verse went like this:

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
Oh, how am I going to be an optimist about this?
If you closed your eyes,
Does it almost feel like you’ve been here before?

Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world.

And now my overactive imagination is imaging a Pompeii survivor and a dethroned king who both lost everything somehow finding each other and falling in love and this is their mantra.

This sounds like the song that would be playing when a really good movie ends and the credits just start rolling but you don't wanna leave the theater. Oddly specific but that's the feeling I get from this

This song is no longer just a song, it’s an emotion.

Wow, these mix really seamlessly! That's really interesting, because they seem to be thematic opposites. Like, Viva La Vida is focused on the impermanence of power, how even the greatest men can't stand against the forces of time and change. On the other hand, Pompeii is about people who were are frozen in time; they can't move from the spot they were standing when they died. On a metaphorical level, it seems to be more about people who are stuck in life; although the world has changed around them, it still feels like nothing has changed.

So really, they're not so different thematically, after all. They're both about powerlessness in the face of nature and time, being unable to move on from better times, unable to adapt to the changing world. Which really brings out themes about humanity's common fate: neither rich nor poor can stop time.

...I majored in English, so sue me.

Both songs are anthems of an era, an era of recent time and memory yet so forgotten for its musical merit. Yet what brings us back to remembering? Minecraft parodies in our recommendation boxes.

Honestly pretty much any mashup with viva la vida is good. XD

It's ... funny, actuall. All this time - don't ask me how - I was under the impression the band's name was Pompeii, and their song was titled Bastille. I never thought of it to be the other way around because it's their only song I know and the lyrics made sense to me, with the Storming of the Bastille being one of the key events during the French Revolution ('and the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love'). With Viva la Vida being a song about this very revolution (at least I think it is? Correct me if I'm wrong), I just thought, 'Wow, brilliant mashup with Bastille!'
Well, such is life, we never stop learning.

as a history nerd, you might think I'd want this mashup to be the soundtrack of the French Revolution, or something, but no. This is the fall of Constantinople in the eyes of the soldiers and their educated officers. This is the soldiers fighting their asses off to save everything they can (bastille) and the Officers trying to save the last bastion of this great empire they learned of, in one last battle to determine the fate of history (Viva la Vida). And the soldiers remembering the good times when they were young or at peace (Viva la Vida) while the Officers look at the battle plans and hope to god they survive, just one more night (Bastille). That's what I think about hearing this. The final defense of the Roman Empire, the sight of history being fought for and those who know all of this and choose their side, if not for victory, than to at least die for a cause they believe.

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
If you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?

That's literally the most epic part of any mashup I've ever heard of any song.
