Don't be fooled, It may be called a Hammerhead Shark, but they aren't the construction workers of the sea.

The cephalofoil (name of their weird head) provides many other advantages. The shape increases maneuverability, letting them make sharper turns than other sharks. It allows them to dig up stingrays, their favorite prey, and pin them down while they bite them.

Finally, shark snouts are full of tiny electro-receptive dots called ampullae of Lorenzini. It's a sixth sense that lets them detect electrical signals generated by other animals. The cephalofoil provides more space for these dots, which is how they find buried stingrays.

The other theory hammerheads developed a flat head is to better use a sharks 6th sense. Sharks have a 6th sense called Ampullae of Lorenzini which are the tiny little holes that cover a shark's snout. They can detect electrical pulses from a heartbeat in the water to help them find camouflaged/hidden prey or hunt in bad visibility. Many hammerheads have been observed using this ability to glide close to the sandy ocean floor using their flat, wide heads like a metal detector searching for rays, flounder, or other fish/crustaceans that would otherwise be hidden to most other predators.
