Just listen to the engine, your eyes do not need to be focused on the speedometer the whole time.

This depends on the car and gear ratios

It’s based on RPM not speed. This is not correct in any way

I notice in a healthy automatic the gear shifts like every 2k to 3k on the rpm.

Okay…Thank you. Straight forward, simple, and no jokes. THANK YOU!🙏🏾

Definitely need to remember this. My instructor tells me I drive too fast or too slow for the gear I'm on

I'm learning how to drive, never knew what this was for, very interesting. I just thought people were doing random stuff.

For cruising just change at every 4k RPM

Gear 1st 0-20 but u have to change the gear at 10 or 15
Gear 2nd 20-40 change at 30 or 40
Gear 3rd 40-60 change at 50 of 60
gear 4th 60-80 change at 70 or 80
Gear 5th 80-160

Gear reverse 0-20

at gear reverse do not give race slowly pull the clutch back and the car will start to move

Gear one do the same as gear reverse
Gear two 2️⃣ try to pull back lil fast slowly not to fast
Gear three push the clutch in and back not slowly like normal
Gear four is like gear three
Gear 5 is like four too

( I am 12 year old and I learn how to drive a motorcycle and a manual car )

It's more about rpm than speed. Most cars like to be around 1500-2000 revs though will depend on the vehicle.

Gear shifts are by rmp principally. Speed and rpm can correspond, but rpm is the metric to go off of

Thanks guys! I learned more from the comments and not the video. I'll never forget you!

Okay, two things. Using this logic, what gear do I use when I’m at 45mph? Also, it’s much better to base your gear off your engine RPM, rather than your speed. If you’re going up hill, you’ll be in a lower gear than if you’re going flat/downhill. I am 13 years old and can’t drive yet; you should know better.

It’s not based on the speed because every car is different. It’s based on the rpm and to keep the engine in the happy zone( aka 1 million miles an hour for the boys out there) but that doesn’t mean you look at the gauge. You just use your ears and think when it’s right to shift

this is probably correct for a modern 5 speed petrol car, however there is a lot of variatoon, for example my 2013 golf diesel 5 speed doesnt like 30mph in 4th and prefers 3rd

And there’s me just cruising on the motorway in 2nd at 70mph

Ever cars transmission is different depending on the gear ratios
