Walk thru before drywall revealed a stud that's rather bowed. This is a technique @carpentry_bymar has shown and it works quite well. Don't do this in a load bearing wall

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a contractor say “good enough” I could retire 😂

As a drywaller, we straight cut half way through a stud if it was too bowed and then just screwed the drywall normally with the same result. Non-loadbearing wall, of course.

You need to do that on every 3rd board from Menards

---- here's another 'trick' : cull the studs BEFORE you begin, use only those within a narrow limit, crown all studs in the same direction - works wonders

I was a framing foreman for 12yrs and been building houses over 25yrs. We did it like this on custom houses a long time ago but it's not the right way. In our contract with U.S Homes they had a ¼" in 8' tolerance, so ⅛" gap on each end of your 8' level. The proper way is to paper and plane the whole house using sheetrock shims and a planer. Always check your ceilings, especially the hangers on girder trusses alot of times sit low.

We plane them in California... and use Grey Pupoun mustard..

Had a builder opt for the worst yellow pine studs for a two story home, because they were cheaper. We warned him but it didn't do any good. Almost every stud went crooked in the whole house. It ended up costing him a third more for us to replace and straighten what we could. He tried sueing the lumber company, but he picked it, so he got to eat it.

I just use a planer. And drywall shim the other side, if necessary.

I like the part where it wasn't even fixed at the end

Another story for you. When we would finish up a project or even tbe day, we would say, "It's gooood enough for this job!"
A builder heard us say this and got his panties all in a bunch. He wanted to know what we had been working on and why it eas just good enough and not the best we could do. He went on for 30 minutes about it and then call my father at another job site and wanted an explanation. He told him the same thing we did. It simply means we are finished. asked him if he could find anything wrong with our work, but he insisted that I show him.
My dad told him he shouldn't be listening in on other people's conversations anyway. He hired another crew on the next job and called us up to fix their mess.
My dad told him no thank, we have move on to greener pastures.
I asked the builder, "Do you need an explanation of what greener pastures implies?"

I was doing the back framing on a house years ago and after the weekend when I walked into the house I noticed the owner had come in and straightened all the studs on the LOAD bearing walls. COOL

When we replaced the 60"s style asbestos bathroom panels in the family house that my dad built, we found the opposite. Every hardwood timber in the wall had been hand planed to give a flat surface, I presume so the panels would not crack. I knew the old boy loved planing timber, but that was wild.

Did you intentionally cut that line through the knot? Or do you just cut it at its highest point/how do you determine where to cut it?

We used to make a 90 cut on the other side and drive a thin wedge in the saw cut. Worked well.

Check both end studs for straight. Use a string line and 3 blocks of the same thickness. Dont use a level over long distances.

Just cut it in the middle and get it straight and then we normally gun nail a length to the side of the stud for strength - A straight piece thou

That's actually super nifty. Thanks for the tip, bro.

Some inspectors will go off the wall if they see this lol

Okay, is the idea that the saw cut removes enough wood that when the cut is closed up by the screws it has removed the bow?
