"Hitstop" is an intentional pause programmed into some games to make attacks feel weighty and impactful. This is especially common in fighting games.

I used a mod to show the difference between these three:
- Hitstop: on / Camera shake: on (default)
- Hitstop: off / Camera shake: off
- Hitstop: off / Camera shake: on

Hot take, but I hate the implementation of hitstop where it literally stops time. A good example of it that I like is in Monster Hunter, where big moves with weapons like Great Sword and Hammer have hitstop, but it only freezes the character animation, not the entire game.
