Solving the HARDEST Moments & Friction A Level Mechanics past question! Edexcel 2023 Maths revision!

Hi! I am @alevelmathstutoruk and I produce videos covering the A-level Maths syllabus in the UK. I am a first class BSc Mathematics graduate from a Russell Group UK university and I am currently working as an online maths tutor.

In today's video I provide my solution to Q9 from the Edexcel Paper 3 A level Maths specimen paper (in the mechanics half of the paper)

The first part of the question, we are required to find the magnitude of the reaction force exerted onto a ladder leaning against a smooth surface in equilibrium - however the ladder lies on a rough horizontal ground, with an additional unknown horizontal force being provided on the ground. In this first part we take moments about the contact point of the ladder with the ground, and this gives us the reaction force from the wall.

Part (b) of the question, we need to find the range of value of this unknown horizontal force by determining the range of friction values. And then lastly in part (c) we have to explain why someone standing at the bottom of the ladder would help keep the ladder in equilibrium.
