The first thing you want to do is verify how much water you have in the lawn. Ideally we want 6-8 inches of water saturation in the soil. Without water the grass goes into stress dormancy and goes brown. Lawns are sensitive to this process and if you leave your grass dry for too long it dies. Its important to act fast. Once the grass goes brown we usually have two weeks to wake it up.

Step 1 is to push the water back into the lawn. We do not want to water too much too soon. I recommend for the average system to water 1 hour daily for 6 to 10 days to catch the soil back up. For hunter mp rotator systems this means you'll need to water two hours per day or more. I recommend watering each zone 15 minutes at a time 4 times per day. this helps the water saturate into the soil. If you push too much water too fast the water will run off the top.

Step 2 is using a recovery product. My preference is essential plus 1-0-1 at 4oz per 1 gallon over 1000 sq ft. Other products such as greene county fert's rgs and Revive granular works great.

Optional Step
- If the dead spots have sat longer than 2 weeks it may be wise to lightly rake through the dead matter. this will help encourage the new growth to find the sunlight.

Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. I really like these “What’s wrong with my lawn” type videos. Feel like I always learn a lot, even if the material has been covered before. Repetition is the key to learning right? Thanks for the help and good luck with your new venture.

I remember dealing with getting that 6”-8” of water saturation in my soil, and I had to deal with fungus on the grass because of watering so much, but I put treatment down and let the fungus grow up to where I could bag it and get rid of it! Learned it from your channel years ago!

Nice job! Great to see the before/after, proof it works. So, after the initial saturation, did you continue to over-water after spraying or reduced water to 15 mins per day? How can you tell initially if its drought or nugs or fungus? I will check your other videos to see if you cover other issues. Thanks for bringing these videos to youtube and sharing your solutions.

If I have brown spots from dogs and heat damage from not enough water - do I use both Essential 101 and the organic blend you mention in the dog spot video similar to revive? or one or the other? thanks

Thanks man, I have this same exact problem, I really appreciate this video. Getting right on it. My Backyard looks like that one across the street though. YIKES! seems like the edges are receding and the center ( Most sunshine falls there because we have so many trees ( Idaho Trees 50 feet and higher all around ) and the ground is HARD. the whole back yard slants slightly to the edge of a steep embankment which goes directly to the creek out back . with the hardness of the dirt It's hard to keep the water on the lawn, seems like the top soil is letting the water run out of the yard . I will check more videos, meanwhile I am going you front to do what you just did and pray it works.

Thanks for your videos. My yard is looking fantastic with me using a backpack sprayer for weed control, fungicide, and dallis grass control.

Thanks Ginja. Been really dry here by Chicago the last 6 weeks. I was irrigating but must have not been enough because I was getting those spots. Looked similar to fungus but knew there was no way it could be. Been way too dry and no humidity. I bought some of that Essentials plus too! Micros will definitely help nutrient intake and help retain moisture

I'm in the process of spraying tenacity on our yard. Then I need to get something for the grubs in the yard as well.

Can this be used on ALL types of grass?

good video regarding the need to top up water first before resuming normal watering. i'll reprogram my irrigation today to pound some water overnight for the next week.

Ginja, love your videos!! Question for you: Should I apply the recovery product and THEN water for 6-10 days or do I need to saturate the soil first before applying the recovery product? How does the watering go after applying the product?

Wasup LMA. I recently burned my grass with fertilizer and it's brown but I only put down 20 squares. How can I bring it back? Do I need to stop watering it or just remove the dead areas and plant more?

water is a good cure for a lot of stuff, especially lawns...we are in a near drought in Central NY now and it seems like the only green stuff is clover and dandelions....add a little Quebec smoke flowing down our way and we have a near Western US conditions...luckily these only last a few weeks and we will pay for it in July or August with record rainfall etc ...LOL...those lawns looks great in the before and after

I would have thought Air8 would be beneficial here, but you're saying RGS?

Can you do a video on how to let your lawn go gracefully into dormancy for someone who wants to take some time off from it? My backyard looks exactly like 1:37. It will be 100 degrees for the next 90 days in Texas with maybe 0 rain and I'm afraid to spray anything else on it (RGS/Essentials, etc.)

Thanks! Super video and information I couldn't find anywhere else, not even asking in a huge online gardening group. You say return to normal watering after the 7-10 nights of soaking 15 mins each zone 4 times per night. Once we get it back to green, what would you consider to be adequate watering to keep the green in the PNW Zone 8B please?

Hi, great video! I had my Bermuda aerated and top soiled yesterday. It was perfectly green and one day later brown spot appeared. Could the top soil have too high of a ph (acidic)? What do I do?

Took a swath into my local place, def have Chinch Bugs. But another person said i was watering too much. I've pulled back water and added their bug kill granular. It's almost looks worse. We've had a hot summer (Boise) and IDK what to do. Do i need to get back on watering 4 days a week, 2x a day? It look amazing to start the season. back is immaculate, just the front sucks
