I can't believe no one has suggested those machine guns were used to discourage enemies from climbing the tank. Many Soviet tanks used to have a machine gun on the back of their turrets for this reason.

It must had been funny if they tried to use all 4 external machine guns at the same time. The driver would be rocking the tank back and forth trying to spray rounds in as well as suddenly breaking and accelerating trying to get the elevation correct, while the gunner and commanders try to move the turret arguing about where the shots are going as they try to look though the periscopes while the tank is bouncing around, haha.

The machine guns was only used to keep enemy soldiers away from the tank, a common practice by soldiers from any army was to throw grenades or explosives into a hatch to kill the crew or fire RPGs at it since the tank cannot engage any threat that was close to it with its main gun.

perhaps rear facing mgs are meant to shoot conscripts who arent advancing enthusiastically enough.

Wow that machine gun on the turret looks even more ridiculous IRL... But please... the IS 7 needs its propeller hat back. Its not a IS 7 without it.

From the front, the IS-7 looks like a Storm Troopers Helmet.

Incredible just how ahead of its time the IS7 was.

I don't play WoT, but I really like the design of the IS-7 :) It's a shame it was never used.

I saw one of these Stalin 3's take 7 or 8 rounds of 105mm ap rounds on the front glacis and the turret.
They bounced off!
This tank was designed in the mid 1940'S!

Who else but the Russians!

The rear-facing machine guns might've been for keeping infantry from climbing onto the tank like those turret rear machine guns other russian heavy tanks had but with twice as much firepower.

"We need more room for vodka, Glorious Stalin."

"THEN MAKE EVERYTHING WITHIN THE TURRET AND HULL VODKA!"

"But where are we going to put the machine guns?!"

True story.

The Rear mounted guns on the turret could probably be used to prevent enemy infantry from getting up on the rear of the tank.
Since turning the turret and Shooting them would be an easy way to clearing any infantry trying to climb ontop of the tank.

Fun fact the reason the is7 wasn’t really produced was because it weighed 65 tons and back then they had a weight limit for a tank and the is7 passed that limit by almost 10 tons
