For those wondering, they cost about $2.3k to 6k depending on the size

We’ve had the same Excalibur Dehydrator for 45 years and have used it for spices, jerky, veggies and fruit. No longer eat grains but it’s great for crisping up nut flour crackers.
Got a Harvest Right 6 years ago and love it for premade meals when time is short. Also, it’s great for bicycle trips!
Both are good investments but you have to be intentional about using them on a regular basis, i.e. weekly to get the best return on your investment.

Great investment. I purchased one about seven years ago and I’ve lived it every since.

Have you done any looking into the type of plastic used for vacuum bags? I can't think of a better option, but you gotta think there's some phthalates or BPA getting in your food. I mean, by design vacuum bags maximize contact with food, is in contact for longer storage times, and is low pressure which accelerates off-gassing.

Cool to see that you’ve made the jump. I’ve spent the past few years trying to justify the investment, but hopefully will pick one up by the end of the year.

I'm interested in more info on this topic, i'd love to improve the quality of my backcountry meals, the commercially available stuff tends to have ingredients i don't want to consume, is low on good fats and protein.

We have had ours for about 10 years now. Since oil and water don't mix, you do have to be careful about not cooking with a lot of oil, etc. I eat only high fat/high protein/keto food, but it works with the right recipes, especially in soups. I also preserve a lot of veggies and herbs.

Did you know that juice from raw garlic has actually been found to kill tumor cells in petri dishes? Costco has a 3 pound bag of peeled garlic now that I put on the trays and then freeze dry. It is important to have the cloves similar in size so that the water is removed from them evenly and they all finish up at about the same time.

Those that try to beat cancer without drugs are often advised to eat a couple of raw garlic cloves a day. GAG. Anyway, a freeze-dried garlic clove is really easy to get down. I usually add a couple to my salad each day and hardly notice when it is going down.

Just one of the THOUSANDS of ways that you can enhance your family's nutrition, save money and prepare for an emergency with a freeze dryer.

*I'd like one of these as I like gadgets and whatnot, but the amount of food I could buy instead here in Thailand doesn't make much sense for me. So many markets and and food delivery and stuff here. This would pay for years of food plus buffets out lol. Thanks for sharing though, hope you enjoy it* 💪👍

This is not compressor but vacuum pump. The preassure is close to 0 and ice is sublimated to vapour which is pumped out. The Great advantage for fruits is that they keeps they shapes and size. They do not shrinks and keeps fresh taste.

I've used the dehydrator for years... even a fan of Alton Brown's Box Fan DIY dehydrator. Would love to have a freeze dryer, but I'm not sure I can justify the cost.

Very interesting, never even heard of freeze drying before this. How's the food taste when rehydrated?
