I Sold My 3rd Gen Tundra...Again...Here's Why

I really did enjoy this 3rd Gen Tundra Platinum, but I didn’t love it. I wanted to, but all the little things just kept adding up. The powertrain was AMAZING, tons of power, decent MPG when stock, and a pleasure to drive (powertrain wise). I truly hope Toyota has heard all our criticisms us 3rd Gen owners have had with our trucks to make the upcoming 3.5 Gen Tundra refresh as iconic as the 2.5 Gen prior.

I feel like there are some things that I missed in this video but I’ve said them in others. This truck was very good when I bought it. Around 4K miles it started to have “window rattle” issues which then translated to insanely bad wind noise with various warrantied seals. Slight console rattle, door rattles and just cheaper feeling materials throughout. Lacking some features I just wish were standard as well for the price. Like acoustic windows, power tailgate and some other things.

The positive though is that the truck drives GREAT! Loads of power and smooth transmission. The infotainment screen was snappy too and never gave me issues. The heated seats cook and feel so good on long drives. The 6.5’ bed with a crew max is the best combo too for those who really use their trucks. I appreciate Toyota offers that.

I will have another 3rd Gen. I have faith.

I had the same issue with the ac. Also the panel will not always illuminate where the air is coming from (feet, head, etc) but also will randomly not show ac is on but it’s blowing cold. Toyota kept saying no issue found. That’s what makes me rethink Toyota. But eventually a dealer replaced the ac control module and it started working fine again. Also said no issue when the front collision alert would slam the brakes with nothing there. Finally the same dealer that replaced the ac control module also replaced the front facing camera. The center console creeks when you rest on it. I also feel that the paint is not very tough. I’ve gotten so many chips on this truck and I have luckily never had on any of my 7 other vehicles I have owned. Also the trim on the inside of the bed scuffs and tears with anything in the bed.
I liked the tundra for the tow capacity but it doesn’t seem like it’s quite there for the price.

If your not getting a trdpro what's the point of a new Gen 3?

I love my 24, coming form several 4runners mine feels solid and nothing beats that huge cab. I went with 305 k03's on the stock wheels with the Westcott leveling kit and it's perfect. I have 37's on my 392 Rubicon and I get 7 MPG! Mine is a Hybrid, and it makes a surprising difference in how much I like this truck having that battery that is tuned for hp and torque. I love the look of 37's but man, you will pay for them every time you fill up haha.

Toyota quality is not what it used to be, it’s not a shocker at this point, new tundra has too much QC issues, engine issues that are severe. The new Tacoma is now also seeing transmission failures. This new generation of Toyota vehicles are built cheaply, but charge customers a higher premium than other brands.

Agree with the AC issue. My 1794 is nowhere near the coolness of my Old Escalade EXT (2013).

Feeling lucky so far with my ‘22 1794 LB (non-hybrid) w/ ALS. Minor wind noise at driver’s door gasket fixed. RR door gasket wind noise is still an issue but faint. Ticket was opened with Toyota. 2 years in and still no confirmed fix available.
Great road trip truck. Even with 3 people and 800 lbs of gear I get 23+ MPG Highway.
Mixed driving with just me, about 18.

The current wisdom is 35" tires are the best size for full size trucks and 33" are the best size for mid sized trucks.

I’m waiting until the 3rd gen has the reliability reputation the Gen2 5.7 has before I spend 70k on one AND tow hooks! I expect to get another 250k on my 2016 tundra, so I can be patient.

It’s a bummer these issues still exist. I didn’t have my 22 TRD Pro for more than 4 months before I traded it in due to quality issues, crap turning radius, and a delayed throttle response.

I appreciate you being honest and realistic about the next build, that big, E load tires are not necessarily the greatest move on a daily.

Honestly, I'm kind of over Toyota for a while. I love my 5th gen 4Runner, but to me the most interesting new vehicle (truck) out right now is the Ranger Raptor. It may not have any less issues than these Toyotas are having, but at least it's a relatively good value with some features not available on any of its competitors.

Next video is why I bought another Tundra.

Jon, I see the stock wheels have 20.5 MPG. What is the stock tire size and what was the MPG for the 37-inch tires? Thanks.

My 24 with a July build date is dead quiet on the inside, I was all nervous about the wind noise but it's silent.

As far as AC is concerned, it just might be the twin turbos getting a bit too hot so the cabin temp is taking some hit from that.

Agree with you on the A/C doesn’t blow cold enough or hard enough. Wife’s Silverado does a much better job.

What do you do for a living to afford getting shafted like this all the time?

My 2008 pontiac blows cold air. My 2022 Tundra's air is pathetic.

I know you expressed interest in having a more head-to-head competitor to the Raptor version f150 but for me it’s all about having the head to head king ranch 🤣 that was why I went with the 1794
