Math was my weakest subject, so on a bet with myself, I majored in it. Pure hell while completing the work, but In hindsight, best decision I ever made, affecting and influencing me in unimaginable ways. Still paying unexpected dividends.

There's a huge difference between: "I Like The Idea Of Being A Maths Major" to "I Want To Be A Maths Major" That is what people have to contemplate. That difference, is the massive commitment to achieving it.

I'm actually thinking about double majoring in Mathematics so I can have that along with biomedical engineering.

Having an unquenchable thirst for learning, I have multiple interests, but I cannot afford degrees in them all. Right now, I am self-studying at home and also at my workplace (owned by parents). That is exactly what I am doing everyday, instead of watching TV, reading magazines, doing crosswords, etc.
Presently, I am treating all my studies as strictly hobbies first, before I ever decide to attend universities and acquire degrees, but then I might not bother with college, should my career path ever take different directions. I recall many university dropouts like Bill Gates have established tech corporations. To them, degrees are just papers, while talents are everything. Well, I just see what happens for me in few years time.

Right now, I am amassing knowledge & skills as quickly as possible. I always believe in taking shortcuts in learning subjects and saving time. I am self-studying maths for my other interests like programming, 3D animation, etc.

Some personal advice: If you want a job straight out of college (Bachelor's degree) then math/physics is not the best undergraduate degree. Do engineering or other. Now if you plan on going to grad school and are serious about Masters/PhD, then by all means do math. If you're undecided, what I did was major in EE but minor in math but at the same time, I took math classes for fun if I had time. My friends were like why are you taking "so and so" ? I'd be like, cause I want to learn more math duh

I'm also thinking of switching over to math in order to improve my mathematical maturity since our CS dept. is lackluster in math and honestly quite terrible.

Wow, you were a CS major? I never would have thought! I am also a CS major, but i'm not as passionate for math as you are. To be honest, you seemed to me like the type of person who would've decided to be a math major from the first day of college haha. It would be cool to see a video on your academic background, you're a really interesting person. Keep up the good work and happy new year!

Students today and tomorrow are likely to change careers more often than students of the past, so they will need to be much more flexible. Therefore, if they are majoring in engineering, computer science, or nursing, etc and they also love to do math, they could minor in math, have a double major or take math courses that could go towards a math degree, when they graduated from college. They, then, could return to college to take additional math courses, to meet the math degree requirement or graduate school admission requirement or to become an actuary or do several careers that involve math: math teacher, economist, computer science, cryptographer, etc, etc.
Point: if you are good at math, but also want to study something else, you could take several math courses to meet those free electives requirement, as this may become very useful to you (the students) in the future. Technology is changing fast, so students have to be more flexible and prepare to be a life-long learner as math will be used in just about all of these new careers, and doing well in math can give students the confidence they will need to change careers

I started in chemistry which led me to physics because of its mathematical nature. However, I wasn't happy with the hand-wavy treatment of mathematics in physics and I simply hated the experimental side of things. This led me to mathematics, namely pure mathematics. The proof that had gave me sleepless nights (due to excitement and joy) was the formal definition of a limit in my calculus one class. Right then and there I knew that I want to study pure mathematics. :) Currently a pure math major at a reputed public research university in Canada.

IT SEEMS THAT ENGINEERING/COMPUTER SCIENCE IS BETTER SUITED FOR ME.

I majored in math and never used it at my job, but I liked math and the fact that I had a degree helped me to get jobs in CS.

I want to be a mathematician really bad but the job prospects scare me. I would love to do research and teach at a university but it's a tough gig to land. Also, I don't want to be working like crazy to get way less than what industry pays for CompSci and other related jobs. I feel like it's luck if you actually end up in a tenure track position. I have a lot of respect for people that are willing to go through it for a math phd academia job while not knowing how it will turn out.

I’m doing great at my calculus 1 class so, I started considering majoring in math and to be honest I don’t know what to do with a math major, I just picked math because I loved the math classes that I took before calculus 1 and because I need a bachelors to get into med school so, I will be getting a math degree with a minor in chemistry.... 🤷🏻‍♂️

What advice would you give a student, 25, who wants to pursue a math degree part-time?

Sir, is it practical to study engineering, physics, and math, or is it a waste of time considering they all have maths in them?

Currently an engineering student but I'm planning to get all three degrees and possibly doctorate in each field.
